ATTEMPTS to build a detached house next to Dovetail kitchen workshop at Cowling have been refused on appeal by a government planning inspector.

Appellant Les Ingham went to the Planning Inspectorate after his application was refused permission by Craven District Council in December last year. He also applied for costs against the council for what he believed was 'unreasonable behaviour' by the local authority.

Both applications were dismissed by government planning inspector Philip Lewis.

In his decision notice, Mr Lewis said main issues were the impact on the character and appearance on the Cowling Conservation Area and its impact on neighbours.

He concluded the proposed house would have an 'unacceptable effect' on the living conditions of neighbours, would involve the felling of trees, and would become a 'visually dominant' feature on the landscape, higher than other properties on Nan Scar.
