MEMBERS of the Skipton branch of the Royal British Legion remembered the fallen of World War II with a special ceremony to mark VJ - Victory in Japan - Day on Monday.

They gathered at the town's war memorial on the High Street at 11am as the Rev Veronica James, rector of Holy Trinity Church, led prayers.

Branch chairman Keith Wright, vice-chairman Michael Golding and other members were joined by former Mayor of Skipton and ex-serviceman Cllr Gordon Bell at the ceremony as buglers sounded the Last Post.

VJ Day in Britain is marked on August 15 as that was the day in 1945 when Japan surrendered, in effect ending the war, though it is marked in the USA on September 2, when the Japanese made a formal surrender.

Mr Golding said: "It's important that we, especially the young, remember that the war didn't end earlier in 1945 with the defeat of Nazi Germany. Fighting in which many, many lives were lost continued in the Pacific, and even after it ended many prisoners-of -war didn't make it home for a long time afterwards.

"We believe that the sacrifice of so many servicemen at that time should never be forgotten."
