COLLECTORS from across Craven gathered in Skipton Town Hall to discover the story behind their Great War mementos in a special WW1 Memorabilia Roadshow event.

Historical experts were on hand to help people discover more of their family stories and give insight into the objects that they own.

Among the items of interest was an original map of the Western Front signed by Field Marshal Douglas Haig and a Military Cross citation signed by Winston Churchill.

The Antiques Roadshow-style event, which was organised as part of the lottery-funded Craven and the First World War project, drew in hundreds of people.

They enjoyed the many activities including demonstrations from a WW1 living history re-enactor, pop-up exhibitions about life in Craven and the region during the war and screenings of the UNESCO listed film, The Battle of the Somme, which was originally shot and screened in 1916.

The event also included a talk from Lucy Moore,WW1 Project Curator at Leeds Museums & Galleries, on Women in the Workplace during the conflict and from military historian Tim Lynch, who shared his experiences about his own research into his Great-Uncle’s WWI story.

Craven and the First World War Project Officer, Rob Freeman, said:"It was great to see so many people come and share with us their treasured family mementoes from the war.

"There were some fascinating objects and the event helped to unearth some unique personal stories."

The project is still looking for anyone with an interesting story or second-hand account from Craven during the First World War to take part in the oral history project.
