GIGGLESWICK School pupil Katie Wright is celebrating after becoming British Judo champion in her weight class - at the age of just 11.

She fought her way to the gold medal in the 'under 32 kilograms' category at the Pre Cadet National Judo Championships at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, having qualified for the prestigious competition after becoming Lancashire champion and North-West champion earlier in the year.

The daughter of Settle Primary School headteacher Richard Wright, Katie only took up the sport after becoming interested in it during a school assembly, and trains at Craven Judo Academy with former Great Britain athlete Danny Harper.

Her twin brother Jack was also competing over the weekend in Sheffield and representing the Craven judo academy.

Katie said: "We have a very supportive club and I would not have achieved so much without the hard work of Danny Harper and all the other judoka who train locally. Giggleswick School has also been incredibly supportive and staff and friends made me feel like a hero when I returned to school on Monday. Jessica Ennis-Hill inspires me because she seems like a nice person as well as being a really good athlete."
