A MAJOR operation is being staged to clear debris from a 15-mile stretch of the River Aire to combat flood risks.
Trees and other debris clogging the waterway between Steeton and Bell Busk, near Coniston Cold, will be shifted.
Contractor Turner & Townsend is carrying out the work on behalf of the Environment Agency.
Project manager, Richard Anelay, said: "This is a major waterway clearance project, which will help improve flows and lessen flood risks in the area.
"A detailed ecological survey has been carried out and the work will specifically target the removal of trees, vegetation and debris that is deemed a potential flood risk.
"There will also be some general pruning.
"The contractors will carry out all aspects of work with due regard for watercourse ecology and the environmental setting. The waste materials will largely be used for habitat creation.
"Works will not take place during the bird nesting season, nor will they interfere with other wildlife such as bats and otters."
The project was due to start this week and should be complete by the end of March.
