THE husband of a brave mum battling bowel cancer has told online wellwishers how they have had to say their heartbreaking goodbyes twice this week, expecting the worst.

Over the last few days at the Hallwang Clinic in Germany, 33-year-old Sally Major's family has hit "rock bottom" says her husband Liam believing they were just minutes from the end.

But the mum-of-four from Silsden has rallied to new treatment and despite being "almost comatose", sleeping 23 hours a day, has managed to assure her family she will win her fight against the disease.

Mr Major said: "We have had a very, very scary week, following the scan showing us the disease had progressed, Sally’s renal function has dipped and blood urea levels risen, a lot.

"On two occasions over the last few days we have all prepared ourselves for the worst and thought we were within minutes of the end. We had the kids saying their goodbyes to their adored, amazing mum, all declaring our love for her and expecting the worst. Seeing her unable to move, speak, communicate at all has been the hardest thing I’ve ever had to witness and there was nothing I could do about it but hope and pray for the best."

He said doctors at the private oncology clinic near Stuttgart have told them the new treatment, not available on the NHS in England, is working but it has also added strain to the kidneys which is critical at the minute.

"In true Sally style, although she spends 23 hours of the day asleep/barely conscious she has assured us she’s not dying, she’s fighting and in her own words will win. This week has been the most testing yet, taken us all to rock bottom, but my amazing, courageous rock of a wife is slowly pulling it back," he said.

Mr Major said his wife had managed to pucker up for her daughter Maisy and whisper "I love you too" which was what they all needed.

He told supporters on their fundraising You Caring page that it appears to show a nest egg of £70,000 but the amount is mostly spent. He said: "We have paid a 42,000 Euro bill this week and currently have around £18,000 left which will hopefully cover next week. We really desperately need everyone's continuing support, the estimated cost of ongoing treatment is at least 17,000 Euros per fortnight and as you all know, this horrific disease is ever-changing and may need more than that. Once again I feel awful with the begging bowl, asking those who have already helped so much but we don’t have anywhere else to go and need your help to spread the word further."

Mr Major is now urging people to donate a small amount each week or month. "If you can spare a pound a week, with around 12,000 followers that would cover our treatment costs and therefore spare my kids the years of torture they will face if they lose their adored mummy," he said.

The account details for donations are: Mrs Sally Major, S/C: 11-07-06, A/C: 11065364.

The couple have already sold the family car, remortgaged their home and borrowed from family, friends and the bank.

"Please please please keep the support going, spread the word, keep the events going, we are so so grateful for all of this. We are also in the planning stages of setting up a trust to raise awareness of bowel cancer in young people and to offer funding for private colonoscopies for those patients who find themselves in Sally’s position to prevent any others from suffering like this," added Mr Major.
