THE first of Grassington's two yearly horticultural shows got off to a flying start, with the early arrival of spring, and then its sudden disappearance, having little effect on what organisers called the "outstanding floral exhibits."

Every class was well supported and extra space was needed in several areas, including tulips, flower arranging and baking.

Grassington and District Horticultural Society chairman Philip Johnson said: "The number of people entering one or more of the classes exceeded the magnificent turnout of 2016 with exhibits again surpassing the 450 mark.

"The atmosphere on the day was warm and sunny outside whilst warm and extremely colourful inside.

"However, the quantity of entries did not mean poorer quality and the very high standards, that had impressed the judges over previous years, continued to be evident.

"Both the quantity and quality of entries in the baking and preserves sections were also excellent with many classes full to overflowing as was the flower-arranging section. The quality and sheer visual impact were outstanding.

"The judges - David Allinson for flowers, Eileen Proud for flower arranging and Rachel Hindle for baking and preserves - did an outstanding job, especially when one considers there were over 30 entries in one flower class alone and in a bakery section 17 lots of chocolate brownies to taste!

"The society gives its thanks to all the volunteers who made the day a success, the people who entered the various classes and the many visitors who came and enjoyed the visual spectacle."
