MOVES have been made to make Settle more cycle friendly as it prepares to welcome two cycling events this summer.

A grant from Craven district council has enabled Settle Town Council to set up cycle stands in the market place.

It comes as the WRC Classic Cycle race is lined up to go through the town on Sunday, June 25, and the Water Cycle Challenge, organised by Yorkshire Water in aid of the charity Water Aid, passes near Bridge End, Settle on Saturday, July 1.

Members of the council are looking into whether it would be possible to rearrange Bond Lane play area to accommodate the skate park or locate it at the former middle school site. People interested in getting involved should telephone on 01729 823617.

The council has committed to a street light improvement scheme and so far ten columns with new 20w LED fittings have been replaced.

Cast iron and concrete columns are first on the list.

The rolling programme will continued through 2017-18 until all the 167 lights are up to North Yorkshire County Council standard.

Columns that belong to Settle Town Council will be numbered.
