ANNE Lindsay from Steeton was spot on with her identification of last week's Craven Curiosity, correctly suggesting it was 'a crumb tray as in Brush and Crumb Tray'. Martin Hanson, from Horton-in-Ribblesdale, was also correct, and even has one himself. "Ours like this is in regular use as a crumb tray. Whether it ever had another use never occurred to us, I certainly can’t think of anything else but would be interested if it was intended to do a different job," he says.
Experts from Craven Museum and Gallery, Skipton Town Hall, where it is now on show, tell us: "This is a crumbs tray which would have been used along with a small hand brush to clear away the crumbs after a meal. The crumb tray and brush was most likely to have been used by a maid and it remained a useful household item until the 1920s when vacuum cleaners came into more popular use. " Suggestions for this week's Craven Curiosity should be sent no later than 8am on Monday to lesley.tate@cravenherald.co.uk
