GIGGLESWICK School's Euan Brennan is off to Italy after being selected to represent England in the European Mountain Running Youth Cup.

Euan, 16, from Blubberhouses, Otley, gained automatic selection after winning the U19 England selection race at Hutton Roof, Cumbria, last month.

The race in Italy will be held on June 26, with Euan part of a team of four.

"I went to the race at Hutton Roof hoping to get into the top four so to have won feels really good," said Euan.

"The whole team are pretty close as we have been racing together all season so going to Italy should be fun. It feels like such an achievement after I missed the trial race last year."

Shortly after England Athletics confirmed Euan’s selection he and fellow school pupil Tom Humphries, 16, from Hesket Newmarket, ran in the final race of the FRA English Championships.

Euan finished first in the league and so is officially the U17 English Fell Champion, while Tom finished in seventh place.

Dan Cook, Giggleswick School's director of sport, said: "Both boys have trained incredibly hard and had a terrific running season. Everyone is very proud of them and we are delighted Euan is representing England, he really deserves it."
