FORMER top fell runner - and outstanding dry stone waller - Steven Hawkins, of Grassington, is guest of honour and starter at this year's Burnsall Feast Sports on Saturday.

The village's fell race is one of the oldest in the country, and more than 150 runners are expected be at the start of the race at 4.30pm. Last year's winner was Sam Tosh.

And well over 100 runners are also expected to enter the 10-mile Road Race, starting at 2pm, and won last year by Ian Holmes of Bingley Harriers.

The day's festivities start on Burnsall village green at 1pm with entertainment for the family, including children's races starting at 1.30pm and a pet show, starting at 3pm.

Also featured this year are egg throwing, ladies' races and a men's wheelbarrow race, as well as a tombola, raffle and produce stall.

Among the traditional attractions are Punch and Judy shows, a coconut shy, a bouncy castle and pillow-fighting.

The event's publicity officer John Clark said: "The tombola, raffle and produce stall are important fundraisers, as there is no charge for a programme, nor is there a charge for entry.

"It is worthy of mention that we were delighted that last year there were 34 competitors in the Under 10 Fell Race from 22 schools and clubs. The sport is obviously in safe hands.

"Thanks are due to referee and fell race commentator Dave Hodgson, who never lets us down, and to the organising committee, now with the welcome presence of the ladies. We just hope for good weather, as last year's was far from ideal!"
