FOLLOWING from the school’s impressive A level results last week, pupils at Giggleswick are celebrating further examination success.

Pupils have amassed a haul of top grades in the GCSE tests across the sciences with over 90 percent of candidates in physics and 80 percent in biology and chemistry achieving A*/A grades. Three girls were awarded straight A*s across all three sciences.

Overall GCSE results remained strong and pupils with 92 percent achieving A*-C grades, showing an increase on 2016 results and over 40 percent achieving A*A grades which compares with a national average of 21 percent.

George Collins, who achieved 10 A*/A grades, was one of the first to pick up his results today before heading off to perform at CarFest the same afternoon.

He said: “I’m shell-shocked, really happy and delighted with my sciences. I worked extremely hard, kept my focus and my teachers were so supportive.”

George is also a keen musician, winning Young Musician of the Year at Giggleswick this year and now has aspirations to work in the music industry.

He added: “I really love the music department and being part of the school band at Giggleswick. These results top off what has been a great summer, I’ve been lucky enough to play at Harrogate Fake Festival and now I’m off to perform at CarFest with my brother.”

Alice Stephens achieved 10 A*/A grades too and, alongside her straight As in sciences, she was extremely proud of her A* in Latin and A in Maths.

She said: “Wow! I’m really shocked but so pleased. Science is great at Giggleswick but they also have real strength in the arts, history, politics and English and I’d be silly not to take the opportunity to study these at A level at Gigg.

"The best thing for me has been the Debating Society. I’m not a naturally confident person and it has really help me to build confidence and improve my speech writing skills.”

Euan Brennan and Tom Humphries decided to celebrate their results by going on a run in preparation for their England Fell Running Trials event in two weeks’ time.

Euan was another top achieving scientist at Giggleswick, awarded 8A*/A grades and now looking to take his biology through to A level.

He said: "The teachers are great - they make it exciting, give you so much extra information around the subject and have also helped me get connected with an engineering company who are going to help me with my research project next year in the sixth form."

Headmaster, Mark Turnbull said: “These results reflect the hard work of our pupils and the inspirational work of our teaching staff in the department who take their subject way beyond the classroom, connecting with industry and the real world of science, university trips, visiting professors, science and astronomy clubs.

"We place just as much importance on personal development outside the classroom and it’s great to see pupils like George, Euan and Tom, finding the time to achieve real success in their passions of music and running alongside their studies.”
