RAINY and windy weather in the run-up did not help exhibitors at Grassington Horticultural Society's 40th annual show, though there was still stiff competition in all categories.

No single competitor was dominant and there were four first-time trophy winners, including the prized achievement of 'Most Points in Show' by Glenda Priestnall, a new member of the society.

Chairman Philip Johnson said: "The inclement weather proved too much for many of the society's members - for the first time in over a decade there was a significant reduction in the number of entries, with some classes not being represented at all.

"However, those members who did manage to rescue beleaguered flowers and vegetables from the rain and wind showed them off to their best advantage and earned well deserved praise from each of the judges - Mr K Jackson for flowers, Mrs D Whelan for flower arranging and Mr R Sorley on vegetables - and the society's heartfelt thanks is given to the judges for their time and expertise."

The society meets on the first Thursday of each month, October to April inclusive, in Grassington Town Hall. New members and guests are welcome.
