A woman was rescued from the river by a member of the public in Gargrave tonight, say North Yorkshire Fire Brigade.

Firefighters were called out to the incident at sometime around 5pm to reports of someone going into the river.

The woman is reported to have been rescued by a member of the public living nearby.

A firefighter has described the rescuer as a 'true hero'.

She was then transported to hospital by Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

Martyn Hughes, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Servicewatch manager for Skipton Fire Station,  tweeted at around 6pm: "Now returning from a water rescue incident #Gargrave where a member of the public has rescued someone from the river #TrueHero

"Lady rescued to embankment by a local neighbour before we arrived, assisted @YorksAmbulance to carry casualty to ambulance"

The woman went into the water close to the road bridge, just behind the bus stop and public toilets in the High Street. Firefighters helped to carry her about 1000 yards to the waiting ambulance.

A spokeswoman for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service said a call was received at 5.16pm to a report of a person in the river and that an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle had been sent out. The woman was taken to Airedale General Hospital.
