LAST week's Hidden Craven, which will be the last for a while, was the entrance to Raikes Road Burial Ground in Skipton. The entrance used to be through a wooden gate, but last year, the gate was replaced by the Friends group with these rather splendid iron ones, including date marker.

And they have an interesting history. Provided by Mark Burt, of Restoration Ironwork through Skipton Town Council’s estates officer, Les Chandler, they were actually made by Mark for a private drive almost 30 years ago. After the original owners parted, the gates went into storage, where they remained until last year, when they were restored by Mark. The gates, which originally included an opening for pedestrians, needed to be adapted to fit the drive to the burial ground. The burial ground is supported by the town council, and the National Lottery. And well done Judith Henderson, for recognising where they were. I'm told her grandparents lived opposite the entrance to the burial ground for many years.

Now that Craven Museum and Gallery is open again following its annual spring clean, we can return to Craven Curiosities, which have been assembled for us by collections assistant Bryan Morgan, and can be viewed at the museum, in Skipton Town Hall.

Suggestions as to what this week's curiosity is should be sent before 8am on Monday to lesley.tate@cravenherald.co.uk
