A BARNOLDSWICK high school’s Pi Day equated to a fun event for primary school children. Year 4 and 5 pupils from 13 primary schools took part in a range of learning activities to mark Pi Day at West Craven High School.

Organised by maths teacher Catherine Erskine and supported by Year 8 students, the teams of four students from each primary school learned about Pi, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, through a series of activities including writing a song to remember some of its digits.

After a morning of learning about Pi and its infinite digits, students from Gisburn Primary School correctly recited 61 digits from memory.

Craven area primary schools taking part in the event were Barnoldswick C of E, Kelbrook, Coates Lane, St Joseph’s, Thornton-in-Craven, Cowling and Earby Springfield.

Mrs Erskine said: “It was fantastic to see so many local primary children engaged with learning about maths, and Pi in particular.”
