IMPROVEMENT work has resumed on the canal towpath between Silsden and Riddlesden following an arson attack.

The Canals & River Trust said work was stopped for three days while burned-out mini-diggers were removed and replacement vehicles brought in.

Some signage and timber was also damaged and had to be replaced following the night-time incident on June11.

A spokesman for the Canal & River Trust said: “Three excavators belonging to our contractors were completely burnt out in this incident, causing a delay of three days. The replacements are now on site and work is continuing.”

The diggers were being used by contractors undertaking a £2.9 million project to improve towpath across West Yorkshire.

The arson attack was criticised by Keighley MP John Grogan and town and district councillor Adrian Naylor.

Firefighters had to carry hoses half a mile on foot because their vehicle could not get down narrow Brunthwaite Bridge Lane to reach the canal.
