A TOTAL of 12 suspected drink or drug drivers were arrested in Craven as part of North Yorkshire Police’s month long campaign coinciding with the World Cup.
Across the whole of North Yorkshire, 118 were arrested between June 14 and July 14 in the clampdown on drinks and drugs driving, of which 53 have been charged, 45 bailed or released pending further investigations, and 17 released with no further action. Ten people have been convicted, with bans totalling 22 years, and fines totalling more than £6,500.
Police say the number of arrests is 20 more than a similar campaign that took place last year, and could be down to people going out to watch World Cup matches, the warm weather, as well as effective enforcement tactics.
Roads Policing Inspector Dave Barf said: “The high number of arrests during our campaign shows how determined we are to take drink and drug drivers off our roads. It’s a destructive scourge that wrecks people’s lives, so I’m glad we’ve had such positive impact during our month-long campaign.”
