GROWING numbers of beavers, cubs and scouts across South Craven have led to an appeal for more adult helpers to help cope with demand.
Increasing numbers, together with the setting up of new groups, has meant there is not enough adult members or scout leaders to satisfy demand.
District Scout Commissioner, Dave Viney, said: “The number of young people joining scout groups in the district, at all levels, is higher than it has been for some years – and many groups are now operating at full capacity and with waiting lists in some areas.
“This is why we are putting out an appeal for parents and other adults to think about getting involved. Without more people we, sadly, face turning our young people away."
People can get involved in several different ways, from being a scout leader, or assistant leader, to less informal roles such as a parent helper, or section assistant.
Mr Viney said: “The roles are all voluntary, but very rewarding. Generally people will only need to commit to a couple of hours a week – although, of course, they would be very welcome to be involved as much as they like.”
At the 5th Skipton group, leaders need to commit to helping with a 90 minute session from 7.30pm to 9pm on Fridays– but other groups meet on many other evenings each week, so there is likely to be something to suit potential helpers whatever their free time is. In addition, occasional planning meetings are held two or gthree times a year.
Parent helpers or section assistants usually help between one and two hours per week – but again, can be involved as much as their time allows.
Previous experience is not necessary, as full training is given and can lead to formal awards in the national scouting training programme.
Mr Viney added: “Young people get masses of enjoyment and new life experiences out of scouting – and it is a real shame that we simply can’t meet the demand for places unless we can increase our adult supporters. Being involved as an adult is equally enjoyable and volunteers make a valuable contribution to the local community."
