FOLLOWING on from the page in last week’s Herald devoted to some of the many old photographs collected by the late Tom Drake down the years, this is another from his collection, loaned by Tom’s friend and neighbour Janice Procter, of Bright Street, Skipton.

We have featured pictures of Skipton High Street on this page fairly frequently down the years, but not that many have been in colour - of sorts. The photograph is actually a postcard, made by F Frith and Co, of Reigate, Surrey, and a normal black and white photo appears to have been hand-tinted. Note the lack of detail on the green hills behind! There is no indication of when it was made, but going by the cars - with a highly non-expert eye - the scene is probably from around 1960.

And it’s remarkable, and perhaps reassuring, how little the High Street - at least superficially from this angle - has changed in that time.
