The family and former colleagues of a popular former Barnoldswick councillor have planted a tree in her memory.

Mary Norcross, who was involved in many voluntary projects and championed facilities for young people, died after a long battle with cancer almost a year ago.

Coun Norcross had served on and chaired Barnoldswick Town Council and represented Barnoldswick as a Pendle councillor. She was also active in many other organisations including the Friends of Valley Gardens and the Victory Park Wheelie Group, where she worked closely with the town's young people to create the wheel park area.

On Monday, Councillors David Whipp, Margaret Bell and Marjorie Adams joined her daughters Lana Lonsdale and Linda Leighton, son-in-law Keith Leighton and granddaughters Francesca and Darcey to plant a Himalayan Birch on Fernlea Avenue.

A commemorative plaque paying tribute to Mrs Norcross will be added and other plants will be placed around the tree to make a small feature.

Coun Bell described Mrs Norcross as her "best friend" and said many people in Barnoldswick would be glad to see a lasting memorial to her.

"Mary was a really well liked and popular lady," she said: "The site is somewhere where we've been wanting to plant a tree for some time and it's also a prominent place in the town so people will look at it and think of Mary. We really wanted her family to be there to see it and I think they really appreciated it."
