GRASSINGTON and District Horticultural Society held yet another successful annual show despite storms presenting problems, along with an exceedingly dry June and a very wet July.
In total there were 281 entries from 33 exhibitors, with Simon Rawlinson winning not only the Marshall Rose Bowl for the best single flower enhibit, but also the Grassington Challenge Cup for the overall most points in the show. For this latter achievement, Simon was also presented with the RHS Banksian medal.
Glenda Priestnall was another double trophy winner, obtaining the society’s Flower Trophy for the most points in the flower section and the David Pickles Cup for the best rose exhibit.
Jo Prouse was awarded the Harker-Leder Salver for the most points in the vegetables section, as well as the Society Cup for the best vegetable exhibit in the show.
The Geoff Cowley Upper Wharfedale Trophy, for best exhibit in the flower arranging section, was won by Fay Maude, who also won the Society’s Floral Cup for the most points in flower arranging.
The Jim Bell Cup for the master gardener category was awarded to David Hobson and the Ron Jenkins Award for the best Fuchsia in the show was won by Birgit Hanson.
The Chairman’s Challenge Trophy was awarded to Joan Alder for the best exhibit of a gladiolus grown from a bulb provided by the society.
Andy Booth, chairman of the Grassington and District Horticultural Society, thanked Show Secretary Angela Beetham, the helpers and all those who supported the event. Donations to the society on the door made £30, the raffle £42, the tombola £70 and teas & coffees £86.
The society offered their thanks to the judges M. Hutchinson (flowers and plants), B. Bell (flower arrangements) and R Sonley (vegetables and fruits).
