POLICE are urging people in Settle to be vigilant following a spate of recent alleged burglaries in the area.

Investigations are ongoing into the crimes which have taken place over the last 'week or so' said police at the weekend. They include the theft of a horse trailer which was taken from a yard in Rathmell overnight on January 16 and January 17.

Police say most of the offences have taken place in early mornings and are urging people to check their security, make sure doors are locked and to be vigilant to 'prevent this type of crime.'

A spokesperson for Craven Police said: "Could we please urge everyone to please take a moment to review their own security arrangements. Ensure doors and windows remain locked, especially overnight. Make sure garages and sheds are locked and secure. Motion sensors and lights covering outside areas are advised. If storing high value bicycles, consider locks and chains, even if they're inside locked buildings. Have you thought about property marking?

"Most offences are being committed in the small hours of the morning. If you have reason to be out and about overnight, who else is? Do you know them? Are they suspicious? If you see someone and aren't sure, tell us.

"Working together and being vigilant is the best way to prevent this sort of crime."
