Bolton Abbey

Rector’s message: This coming Sunday we celebrate the Feast of Candlemas. It is called the Feast of Candlemas because there used to be a candlelit procession before the main service of Holy Communion. The reason for the candles is because on this feast day we remember Jesus being presented in the Temple where he is described as the “Light to lighten the Gentiles”. In the midst of the all the darkness in the world at this time we need to keep the light of Christ alive and remind ourselves that the light of Christ can shine in all our lives. Above all however, we need to reflect this light to all men and women, whatever their faith and whatever their troubles.

There won’t be much mowing for quite a while as snowdrops are out now and daffodils waking up. Sadly wreaths have to go in the green bin as they comprise artificial flowers and wire. Candlemas is always the February 2, exactly 40 days from Christmas Day. It is always celebrated on the day in Ripon Cathedral, where, it is claimed, candles continued to be blessed during the Reformation. These days, depending on the weather around 700 people attend and process with candles during the hymns. A service of evening prayer will be held in St Oswald’s Church on Sunday at 3pm. It is planned to use the 2024 World Watch list from Open doors and to pray for the persecuted.

A club spokesperson said: “After storming the small screen with the hilarious and groundbreaking comedy ‘We Are Lady Parts’, director Manzoor has now taken her innovative vision to the next stage with her debut film which we think announces the advent of a fresh new voice in British cinema. ‘Polite Society’ has been variously described as ‘a kick-ass celebration of sisterhood’ and ‘the sequin-strewn Kung-Fu romp you never knew you needed’.” The film tells the story of a British Pakistani family, specifically two sisters: Lenya (Ritu Arya), about to be married, and Ria (Priya Kansara) who dreams of being the world’s greatest stuntwoman. What follows is both fantastic and hilarious as Ria, assisted by her martial arts crew, sets out to “save” her sister. Cue awkward encounters with potential in-laws alongside mind-boggling fight scenes. The club spokesperson added: “Once again Skipton Film Club is at the forefront in presenting exciting new cinematic talent. With her brilliant new film, Manzoor shows that British cinema is in safe hands.” The screening on February 4 is at 5.15pm. Members and non members welcome.
