Barnoldswick Town Council has initiated a drive to restore the local war memorial.

The item was included on the town council agenda at the request of chairman Richard Whiteley.

However, the issue will have to be referred to Pendle Borough Council’s West Craven Area Committee, which is responsible for the memorial.

Coun David Whipp said: “On one side of the war memorial, the names inscribed in the granite have worn and need to be redone.”

Coun Whipp said the West Craven Committee would have to find funding for the restoration and commission the work, which he hoped would happen before Remembrance Day.

He said that in addition to the names already inscribed, he would like provision to be made for any names originally left off to be put on.

Coun Whipp recently discovered that a distant relative fought in the First World War, but his name was not inscribed on the memorial.

“My dad’s aunt’s son died during the war, but since he was an only child my dad’s aunt was so upset about that she refused to have his name put on the memorial and refused to participate in the Remembrance Day ceremonies.”

Coun Whipp is asking other people to come forward if they have any further names that they would like to be included on the memorial.
