A fundraising ball organised by Embsay teenager Alice Halstead raised an incredible £16,500.

Eighteen-year-old Alice, who suffers from a rare form of diabetes, organised the event as a thank you to children’s charity, Rays of Sunshine.

The charity had sent her on a trip of a lifetime to see a London show and she wanted to make it possible for others to have their dreams fulfilled.

The ball, held at The Queens Hotel, Leeds, last month, was attended by more than 230 people and included entertainment, a meal and a prize raffle, with items donated by celebrities including Craig David and Sir Cliff Richard.

Alice, who still spends every day at Airedale General Hospital, set a target of raising £7,000 – and was amazed to raise almost £10,000 more.

“After a fantastic evening, the ball raised over £16,500, which will be used to grant more wishes to seriously and terminally ill children across the country,” she said.

“It is an excellent achievement, especially knowing more unforgettable wishes can be granted with the money raised.

“I am on a mission to raise as much money as I can, however difficult it may be at times, and help Rays of Sunshine turn wishes into happy memories.”
