Jack Greenwood celebrated his 70th birthday on Saturday by getting on his bike and pedalling 90 miles.

The Horton-in-Ribblesdale resident will give the proceeds of his sponsored ride to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Downs Syndrome Society.

Former fell runner Jack, of Whernside Cottage, took several members of his family with him.

They were his daughter Heidi Mottram – who is the former managing director of Northern Rail – and her husband Tim, who live in Holmfirth, Jack’s second son-in-law Andy Rushforth and family friend Fred Harrison.

The group cycled the road route of the Settle-to-Carlisle railway and then boarded the train at Carlisle to let the locomotive take the strain for the return journey.

“It was quite a warm day but we did OK, completing the journey in 10 hours, which was more or less what we had planned,” said Jack.

The group has raised around £700 through sponsorship so far, which Jack hopes to increase this coming weekend by collecting at local quarries.
