The Lawson family bagged their second Craven Dairy Auction championship and reserve championship double in as many outings at the early August show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart on Monday.

David and Claire Lawson, and their son Matthew, who run the Newbirks pedigree Holstein herd at Mill Farm, Arthington, repeated their success at the July fixture two weeks earlier and landed their fifth dairy title of the year at the Skipton venue.

The Lawsons’ latest victor, the first prize newly calven heifer, was a 12 days calved and giving 32 litres. She remained in the area, joining Glusburn’s Stephen Jeanes for £2,500, the top call in show.

The reserve champion - the second prize newly calven heifer which was ten days calved and giving 28 litres - became yet another Skipton acquisition by multiple dairy cattle buyer William Reed, of Bielby, York, at £2,400.

For good measure, the Lawsons also stepped forward with the first prize newly calven cow, another pedigree that made £1,980 when again falling to Mr Reed. In addition, the family achieved £2,320 with a further heifer bought by Edward Fort, of Silsden Moor.

Bingley’s Keith Downs presented the third prize newly calven heifer, which sold for £1,740 to Martyn Jennings, of Cowling. Mr Downs sold eight heifers to a high of £1,920 twice.

Calton’s Robert Crisp sold four newly calven heifers, three of which made more than £2,000.

A run of maiden heifers from J & RM Sunter, of Worsthorne, made a clean sweep of the prizes in the show class, selling to a high of £760 and an average of £646.

Quality milkers among the 35-strong turnout were again in keen demand, with pedigree newly calven heifers averaging £2,118 and commercial heifers selling to £2,090 at an average of £1,793. Pedigree newly calven cows averaged £1,715, with their commercial counterparts selling to £1,350.

The main Craven Dairy Auction, on Monday, August 19, also features a standalone show and sale for pedigree dairy bulls. Catalogue entries close on Tuesday.
