Barnoldswick Probus Club: Fifty-one members of West Craven Probus listened to Malcolm Tranter tell the life story of Lord Leverhulme, who was born in 1851. His father deemed he would work in the family business, starting at the bottom and work his way up. Introducing his own ideas, things quickly moved on and it became a big international company, Levers Sunlight Soap. His real love in life was architecture and designed many buildings during his life. He built his own village for the workers. John Dodd closed the meeting.

Bolton Abbey Priory Church: The first service on Sunday is 8am Communion (said). At 10.30am we hold our Sung Eucharist and at this service, which is Mothering Sunday, posies will be given to all the ladies at the service. On the first Sunday of the month we have our Liquid Family Service at 9.15am. This is a fun service for children of all ages with activities and refreshments. At 4.30pm we hold Evening Prayer. Each Wednesday there is a Communion Service at 10 am. All services are BCP.

Village hall: Bradley Village Hall can be hired for events such as discos, concerts, band practices, wedding receptions and family parties. The hall has capacity for 100 people and has a permanent stage, changing rooms and a kitchen. There is adequate off-street parking. The costs for Bradley locals hiring the hall are £5 per hour (weekdays) and £10 per hour (weekends), with a special session rate of £65 for the evening at weekends. There are also a number of art boards available to hire for shows and exhibitions, and a conference room for small meetings and audio-visual presentations, at a cost of £15 per session. Clapham Rory-Joe Daniels, 015242 51135 Give and take event: The fourth ever ‘give and take’ event organised by Clapham Waste Reduction (part of Clapham Sustainability Group) will take place on Saturday, March 21, between 10am and noon at Clapham Village Hall. Entrance to the event will cost 50p, with children free, the aim is to recycle unwanted items in a clean and good condition and also pick up something you may like for free. It is fun, surprising and a paradise for creative recyclers. It is not, however, a place for items which would be more appropriately taken to the household waste recycling centre in Settle. A descriptive leaflet will be delivered in advance to households in Clapham and Newby. A qualified electrician will be present on the day, containers will be provided to collect used household batteries and long life light bulbs. Clothes, books, TVs or foam-filled furniture cannot be accepted, but a noticeboard will be available on the day for you to post details, measurements, photos, etc, for large items you may have at home. Book fair: There will be a book fair in Clapham Village Hall on Sunday, March 29. The fair starts at 9.30am through until 4.30pm, with wheelchair access and homemade food available. Coniston Cold Church news: Mother’s Day celebrations take place at 9.30am at St Peter’s Church on Sunday. Flowers for mums, and refreshments for everyone. Come for a lovely time together and make our mothers feel special.

Young Farmers: Last Tuesday Coniston Cold Young Farmers met at The Yorkshire Dales Ice Cream Factory at Halton East. Members were shown Billy-Bobs Ice Cream Parlour, the production facility and play areas, then they enjoyed sampling the finished product. Liam Wallbank thanked manager Hamish Munro for giving the tour. Next week’s meeting is at Coniston to make Easter decorations.

Cononley Joan Nicholson, 01535 630872 Scarecrow festival: The next big diary date for the village, the Scarecrow Festival, is the CVI’s major annual event held on the first May Bank Holiday weekend (May 2 to 4). The theme this year is Lights Camera Action so this is your chance to showcase your favourite films in straw on your front lawns and balconies. A chapel member will normally be available in case you wish to talk or you may just want a bit of peace and quiet. On Tuesday at 10.30am St Mary’s will be holding a Communion service and between 2pm and 4pm the church will be open for tea, coffee and home baking. ‘Smiley Faces’ or toddler’s praise takes place on Friday afternoon from 1.45pm until 3.15pm.On Wednesday 18th March at the Methodist Church at 7.15pm the third meeting of the Lent Group will meet and discuss ‘Poisonous Words and Profane responses’. Parish council: The next meeting of the parish council will be held this evening at 7.30pm in Embsay Village Hall. Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting and register any complaints or concerns, etc, during the public participation portion of the meeting.

Gardening club: In February, 28 people enjoyed the ‘Beauty, Poetry and Humour of Gardens and Plants’ when David Batchelor, secretary of the gardening club, was the speaker. Humour will also figure in the next meeting tomorrow at 7.30pm when the speaker will be Les Foden from the Fylde. Described as a humorous and colourful speaker Les, who is a broadcaster, national flower judge and regular columnist in the Visitor Newspaper, will be speaking on ‘Gardening for Everyone’. With spring just around the corner, this is exactly the right time to be thinking about what to do in the garden, so come along to what promises to be a most enjoyable and worthwhile evening. All are welcome. Entry, which includes tea or coffee and biscuits at the end of the evening, is £3 for non-members and £1.50 for members.

Village hall AGM: Embsay-with-Eastby Village Hall Management Committee invite all residents of Embsay and Eastby to their AGM on Monday at 7pm in the supper room of the hall, a chance to have a say in how the village hall works for the community. The committee is keen for people of all ages to be involved.

Film night: The last film night of the season will take place in Embsay-with-Eastby Village Hall on Wednesday, at 7.30pm, when ‘Sunshine on Leith’ will be screened. This is a musical film based on the songs of the Proclaimers and is the story of two soldiers, friends, returning from the war in Afghanistan to their families in Edinburgh and trying to pick up the lives they left behind them. It is not a dark drama but the shuffling and settling of close relationships within two ordinary families. Made in 2013, one critic dubbed it ‘the feel fabulous film of the year’. A good note on which to close our season as this will be the last film of this season. Admission at the door: £4 includes tea and biscuits.

Pre-school playgroup: The group are collecting the Sainsbury vouchers for Active Kids as these vouchers can be exchanged for all kinds of equipment to keep children active. Vouchers can be left in the post box near the pre-school door. If you receive any free seeds, bulbs, etc, that you don’t want please keep us in mind. Our garden wasn’t very productive last year but we hope to be more successful this year.

Pump meeting: The Village Pump, the over-50s group, meets in the lower hall at Farnhill Methodist Church on Wednesday from 2pm to 3.30pm.

History group: Farnhill and Kildwick Local History Group will meet in the Institute on Monday at 7pm when there will be a short talk on village events and customs. Members and visitors are welcome to bring along their memories, photos and memorabilia of past events. Admission is free.

Institute talk: Paul Haywood will give a talk at the Kildwick and Farnhill Institute on Friday, March 27, at 7.30 pm. The talk is entitled “Points, Curves and Twiddly Bits” – an illustrated look at building styles. Entry is £5. Alcoholic drinks will be available for a donation.

Gargrave Sally Jennings, 01756 748098 Dance: The ballroom dance tomorrow will be hosted by The Bill Johnson Sound from 8pm in the village hall. Flea market: The first one of 2015 is on Sunday between 10am and 4pm in Gargrave Village Hall. Entry is 50p per person and refreshments are available throughout the day.

Church news: Come and join in the Mother’s Day celebrations at St Andrew’s Church on Sunday. Starting at 10.30am with drinks and cakes for everyone, flowers for mums, and crafts for children. Last year’s Mother’s Day service was a lovely time together and there are more treats in store this year. There’ll be special songs, poems and drama. Bring the whole family and make mum feel special.

Hatha Yoga: A new six-week session commences at 9.30m on Wednesday, March 18, in the annex of the village hall and new members are always welcome. Full tuition is provided by Corrine Docherty, who is a qualified British Wheel of Yoga teacher.

Coffee morning: The next one will be held between 10am and noon in the village hall on Saturday, March 28. The Labour candidate for the Skipton and Ripon constituency, Malcolm Birks, will be present to answer any questions you might have.

Comedy night: This will take place on Saturday, April 18. From Here To Absurdity is a 90-minute sketch show which started life at the Edinburgh fringe a few years ago. The performance will commence from 7pm at Gargrave Village Hall and entry is £7.50 per person which will include a pie and pea supper. There will also be a licensed bar. Young Farmers: This week’s meeting was a cake decorating competition, which took place in Gisburn Festival Hall. Kindly judged by Pauline Newbould. All the results scored high with most being around 95. However, the best score of the night was from William Fryars who scored a perfect 100. Annie Pilkington won the girls’ category with a score of 98 points. Next week’s meeting is on ideas for the summer programme.

Grassington Sheila Denby, 01756 752605 Dickensian Festival: The current committee and officials of the Grassington Dickensian Festival are standing down in their entirety. A replacement co-ordinator and team are urgently needed and it is hoped this will be achieved at a meeting in the village’s Octagon Theatre from 6.30pm on Monday. Businesses, stallholders, charities and others involved with this popular annual three-Saturday pre-Christmas event are invited to attend, along with volunteers who would be interested in gilling the vacancies and running the festival.

Computer training: A new online government-funded national training programme, Action Yorkshire, brought a popular session to the Devonshire Institute in Grassington, attracting 15 local trainees. James Russell, of Rural Action Yorkshire, brought his expertise to the first 2.5-hour class last Tuesday afternoon, with the probability that the session will be continued on mTuesdays throughout March. The training is for every stage of computer knowledge, and James was supported on the day by Andrew Wilson, a trustee of the town hall and Devonshire Institute committee, who said that the popularity of the first event had encouraged a continuation of the course. Horton-in-Ribblesdale Caroline Thompson, 01756 759235 Show committee: Members of Horton-in-Ribblesdale Show committee held their annual general meeting combined with a schedule and general business meeting in the Village Hall recently. Officers were all re-elected. The schedule of classes for the 2015 show were discussed. Despite the low entries in the Texel sheep section it was agreed to retain the classes . The donation of a cup for the best overall vegetable in the show will be sourced. The Sargison cup presented annually to a class in the confectionery section will be awarded to the winner of the best cheese and onion pie, this will be a set recipe. Bakers will be pleased to know that an extra class is added for a baking disaster, with entries taken on the day. The new parking arrangements for the sheep exhibitors and visitors had worked very well, and thanks were extended to the Jackson family for providing an extra field. It is hoped that the same arrangement would continue this year but it would require monitoring regarding admission fee`s to the showground as some people had gained entry without paying as the pay point was at another entrance. The next meeting will be on May 12 at 7.30pm in the village hall, everyone welcome.

Church news: Mothering Sunday will be celebrated at St Oswald’s Church on Sunday, when there will be a Holy Communion Service at 10.30am for the combined parishes of Horton, Stainforth and Langcliffe.

Ingleton Sue Brown, 015242 41835 Parish council: At the March meeting of Ingleton Parish Council, representatives of Ingleton in Bloom made several requests, one of which was to install sponsorship signs in flowerbeds around the village. There were no objections to this. Other requests will be passed on to the relevant authorities They also reported that several road signs were in need of cleaning or repair and a list was passed to the clerk. There was a debate regarding the Post Office and the difficulties of siting it in the village centre. Coun Ireton confirmed that both Nat West and Barclays were making arrangements so that residents could process payments through the Post Office. It was agreed to ask M Renshaw from the Post Office to attend the next parish council meeting. The clerk reported that C Woof will attend to the moles in the park and J Morphet will undertake repairs to the donation box for the gent’s toilet at the community centre. Tenders were accepted from Horton Landscaping for work in the Central Gardens and from MHG Contractors for cleaning the public toilets. Councillors voted in favour, with one vote against. The clerk confirmed that three trees on the Brow were due to be felled and Ingleton in Bloom will take the chippings. Coun Ireton spoke regarding the Extra Care Housing development and had ascertained that a similar scheme at Settle had been nearly all let, indicating a high level of need. It was reported that funding was going well for the proposed Splash Park at the swimming pool.

Langcliffe Helen Jarvis, 01729 825303 St John’s Church: There will be a joint service for Mothering Sunday held at St Oswald’s, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, on Sunday. On Sunday, March 22, there will be Holy Communion at 9am. The Union Flag will be at half mast twice this month to mark the 100th anniversaries of the deaths of Thomas Higson Percy (March 9) and Robert Thompson (March 27). Many thanks to everyone who supports the Food Bank appeal so generously. Many people who are not regular churchgoers are contributing by leaving tinned and dried food and household cleaning products and toiletries in the box at the back of church. On June 20 and 21, there is to be a bric a brac sale in church.

Langcliffe Institute: A new recipe book, to be called ‘Favourite Langcliffe Recipes’, is planned to raise funds for the institute’s upkeep. If you would like to contribute a recipe write it out, sign it and give it to Jean Jelley by March 31.

Settle Photographic Group: The next meeting will take place on Monday at 7.30pm at Townhead Court, when the theme for the evening will be “Maybe it is time to turn back... images from active volcanoes”, presented by Harry Pinkerton. There will be two members galleries that evening. The first will be an image straight from the camera and the second will be the colour red.

Big breakfast: The next big breakfast will take place on Saturday, March 21, at 8.30am at St Mary & St Michael Church Hall, Tillman Close, off Kirkgate, Settle. The speaker will be Steve Amphlett. Steve is a member of the ‘Vibrant Settle’ Community Partnership – the organisation behind the Settle FlowerpotFestival. He is also a founding director of Settle Hydro. Cost £3. Scout model railway exhibition: The Scouts’ Model Railway Exhibition will be held at Settle Primary School on Saturday. There will be model layouts, trade sales, and refreshments. Silsden Linda Berry, 01535 654643 Coffee morning: The annual Silsden Civic Society coffee morning will take place on Saturday in St James’ Church hall from 10am to noon. All proceeds will be donated to the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People Charity.

Young Farmers: On March 2, Silsden with Skipton met at Draughton Village Hall for cake decorating. On March 16 Young Farmers will be at Draughton again for a ‘Ready, Steady, Cook!’ night. Congratulations to all those who competed in Hexham for the northern area public speaking finals.

Skipton Labour event: Ann Cryer, former MP for Keighley, will speak at a Skipton Labour Party event tonight. She will talk about Being a Woman in Politics. The free event will take place in the Soroptimist Rooms, on Otley Street, Skipton, at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome.

Embroiderers’ Guild: Members recently enjoyed a day workshop led by member Gail Marsh, learning how to master ply splitting, an ancient technique used to make braids. The next meeting will be held in Christ Church Hall on Monday from 10am. There will be a stitch and chat morning and, at 1pm, Wyn Ingham will give a talk on Eleanor and the Three King. Anyone interested in history, textiles or embroidery is welcome to attend.

Skipton District Oddfellows: The craft group will meet on Tuesday from 1pm. Come along and share your interests with like-minded friends. Irish Night will be celebrated at the Three Links Club on Saturday, March 21 from 8pm with Paddy & Mick. A great night of entertainment. Visitors are very welcome. Holy Trinity Church: Sunday’s 9.45am morning service at Holy Trinity Church – at the top of the High Street – will reflect the celebration of Mothering Sunday, offering a warm welcome to all, but particularly to those in a mothering role and their families. The Rector, the Rev Veronica James, will officiate at Family Communion, which will be followed by refreshments. The Rector will also take the 8am Holy Communion and 5pm Evensong services on that day. Toddle into Church – the special weekly time for pre-school children and their carers – is at 2pm on Tuesday, for an hour. This is a very friendly and informal session. The Lent Course, ‘God through the windows’ in which Rector Veronica seeks to interpret the theology and symbolism of the stained glass and other church artefacts and relate them to contemporary life, continues on Wednesday morning at 11.30am. This will follow mid-week Holy Communion at 10.45am. Please check the noticeboards at the church gates for details of Morning Prayer at 9am Monday to Saturday.

Steeton Flower Club: Steeton Flower Club held its annual general meeting and dinner at the New Inn, Cononley. Chairman Sue Little reported on another busy year, with members being involved in flower festivals at Carleton and Cowling, a 1914 memorial exhibition and Keighley Show. She thanked the committee for their support and again appealed for new members to replace those retiring. The club was in a healthy financial position and a donation was being sent to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The subscription would remain at £30 (visitors £5). The programme for the next year includes some well-known demonstrators and interesting skills evenings and new members are always welcome. The next meeting will be at Sutton Village Hall on Thursday, March 26 at 7.30pm when the demonstration, La Dolce Vita, will be given by Judy Watker.

Theatre meeting: The annual general meeting of Sutton’s Green Hut Theatre Company will take place on April 30 at 7.30pm in its rehearsal hut, which is behind Londis Stores off Main Street. Joint Evangelical midweek Lent studies will be held on March 11 and 25 at Westhouse Village Hall and on March 18 at Burton Methodist Church Hall. The sessions will start at 7.30pm and will be led by Dr Sheila Hunter and Dr Glyn Price. St Oswald’s held a successful messy church event on 21st February 21; the next session is planned for Saturday, August 8, which will St Oswald’s Day.

Following the meeting, WI advisor Cynthia Kent gave a slide presentation on the history of the WI. This week Colin Alderson was due to give a talk entitled My Time at Buckingham Palace.

Fashion show: A charity fashion show arranged by the Wharfedale support group for Manorlands Hospice will be held in Cracoe Village Hall tomorrow at 7pm for 7.30pm. Lent lunches: Simple lunches of soup, bread and cheese, yea or coffee, will continue during Lent on Fridays from 12.30pm throughout March in Kettlewell. Jo and Bill will hold the next lunch tomorrow at their home, The Elms, Kettlewell. All proceeds are in support of Christian Aid, for the Ebola Appeal.

Comic Relief: Kettlewell Toddlers are hosting a fundraising coffee morning in Kettlewell Village Hall from 10.30am until noon. If anyone would like to contribute any baked goods to the cause they would be greatly appreciated.

Carols cash: Carol singing at The Queen’s, Litton, and The Falcon in Arncliffe just before Christmas raised £104.62 for The Children’s Society.

Card service: The Christmas card delivery service in Littondale organised by Sarah Paul for St Oswald’s Church funds raised a total of £122.

Whist drives: Whist drives have resumed on the first Wednesday of every month in Halton Gill Reading Room after the winter break. These sessions, from 2pm, cost just £5.

Leprosy boxes: Leprosy boxes and phials are due for collection in Kettlewell and district. Muriel Raw, 3 Conistone Road, Kettlewell, will be pleased to receive them as soon as possible and grateful to hear from anyone willing to take a box or phial for the coming year.

Theatre night: Leeds LIbrary Theatre touring company will present Alan Bennett’s “Talking Heads” at Kettlewell Village Hall tomorrow from 7.30pm. Adult ticket price is £8.50, children’s tickets are £4. The subject will be “A Lady of Letters” and “Bed Among the Lentils”, performed by Deborah Kelly. Tickets are on the door.

Scarecrow Festival: Six committee members were elected at the extraordinary annual meeting of the Kettlewell Scarecrow Festival, which was attended by 48 people. The places went to David Belk, Paul Hatton. Maureen Heseltine, Jane Lacey, Maggie Walker and Barbara Westerman. At the first meeting following the EGM Nick Davies was co-opted and elected treasurer, David Belk chairman and Verina Bishop secretary. The themes for the trails are to be Roald Dahl characters for the children’s trail, made and arranged by the Friends of Kettlewell Primary School, and West End musicals for the adults’ trail, made by the St Mary’s Church and village hall committee.

History group: Eric Waddington, of ‘The Waddington Fairs’ family, was last month’s speaker at the local history group’s meeting in Cracoe Village Hall. Memories were stirred for those who remembered being brought up when the visiting fairgrounds were something to look forward to and Waddington’s predominated in the Bradford/Halifax area.

Call My Bluff: Thanks are extended to all those who helped to make the ‘Call My Bluff’ event another roaring success. Over 90 people attended Cracoe Village Hall to taste a variety of wines from all corners of the world. A massive £1,500 was raised for St Peter’s Church, Rylstone.

Parish meeting: Rylstone Parish Meeting will be held in Cracoe Village Hall on March 17 from 7pm. Hetton-cum-Bordley Parish Meeting will be held the same evening from 7.30pm.

Wigglesworth Planting ideas: Old Herbaceous sowed many seeds of wisdom whilst potting up his plants at the hall on Friday. The audience was in awe of the intricate greenhouse set even before Peter started his one-man play. A gentle humorous and moving performance followed which was enjoyed by all.

Council to meet: There is a Parish Council meeting on Tuesday at 7.30pm.

Meet and Eat: The Meet and Eat lunch is on Wednesday from 11am to 3pm.
