Church news: The Keasden Church Council will meet in the church tonight at 7.30pm. On Sunday, Austwick Church will hold a pet and rogation family service at 9.30am, followed by Holy Communion at 6.30pm. Next Thursday, May 14, there will be a communion for Ascension Day at Eldroth at 7pm.

Primrose walk: On Sunday, there will be a primrose walk over Oxenber led by Canon Ian Greenhalgh. Meet at the church at 3pm. The walk will be followed by afternoon tea at Wood House by kind invitation of Michael and Frances Southworth.

Barnoldswick Probus Club: Chairman John Dodd reported another good year at the annual general meeting of West Craven Probus. He thanked everyone for their support during the past 12 months. Entertainment was provided by Eric Beardsworth, who told the story of Noel Coward, which was much appreciated by the members.

Bentham History Society: All officers and committee members were re-elected at the annual general meeting of the Ewecross Historical Society in Bentham Methodist Church last week. They included chairman Sir John Kerr, vice chairman Mike Winstanley, secretary Edward Huddleston, treasurer John Wilson, membership secretary Melinda Elder and committee members David Alder, Sara Mason, Margaret Owen and Jenny Fisher. There is one vacancy on the committee. The membership fee is to remain at £10 per year with £3 per meeting for visitors. The first of the summer outings is on June 27 and is a guided tour of the churches at Heversham and Beetham. Following the business, Andy Hornby, with his wife, Cathy, gave an illustrated talk on the Musical Winders of Wyersdale. Andy played a mandolin and a modern wooden penny whistle, while Cathy played a guitar and sang. They told the story of music and dance, now known as folk music, covering the last 500 years. They showed slides of the Winders Band as they played jigs and reels at weddings, in the market place and at any event where people gathered to have fun. Some members of the audience had danced the Lancers, which was a quadrille. The final musical slide show showed three men dancing in a circle with many boisterous movements. The evening concluded with a Jacob’s Join supper.

Bolton Abbey Priory Church: The Sunday services are 8am Communion (said) and 10.30am Sung Eucharist. All services are the Book of Common Prayer.

Pilgrimage: The Two Parishes Pilgrimage will take place on Sunday afternoon. Bolton Abbey worshippers will join parishioners from neighbouring Embsay in retracing the journey, or as much of it as they feel able to, of the Augustinian Canons who travelled from Embsay to Bolton in 1154 to re-found their religious community by the River Wharfe. The pilgrimage will end with a Songs of Praise in the Priory at 4.30pm. There will be two joining points: St Mary’s Embsay at 1.30pm and Billy Bob’s Ice Cream Parlour at 2.45pm. You are welcome to just come to the Songs of Praise.

Ascension Day: There will be a full Sung Eucharist on Ascension Day, next Thursday, May, 14, at 7pm. The congregation will be joined by the choirs, clergy and members of the congregations of St Martin’s and St Barnabas’s, both in Heaton, Bradford.

Village show: The 35th Bolton Abbey Show will be held in Bolton Abbey Village Hall on Saturday at 2pm. Even if you are not exhibiting, please come along, look at the exhibits and enjoy a cup of tea and a chat.

School news: This year’s sports day will be held on Saturday, July 4, and will be combined with a summer fair. The sports day will start at 11am and the summer fair will run until 3pm. The Friends would appreciate any help with organising and running stalls at the event. Year six enjoyed a day at Crucial Crew where topics included internet safety and water safety. Class four were winners of last week’s Walk to School, with 94 per cent of pupils either walking or parking and striding to school. The speaker will be Maggie Smith from Saltaire History Club and her talk is entitled Hollywood Star Dust vs Yorkshire Grit - a Saga at Salts Mill 1981. The owner of Salts Mill in 1981 was the Illingworth Morris group of companies and in 1981 there was a very public struggle for control of the company which involved Pamela Mason, wife of the actor James Mason.

Parish council: The new parish council will meet on Tuesday, May 19, at 7.30pm in Embsay Village Hall. This will be the annual council meeting at which time a number of important internal business matters will be addressed including the election of a new chairman and vice chairman, representation of members on working parties and outside bodies and approval of the draft accounts for 2014-2015. Members of the public are invited to attend and register any complaints or concerns during the public participation portion of the meeting.

Jaywalkers: The Jaywalkers will stage the comedy, A Month of Sundays, at Gargrave Village Hall from 7.30pm on Saturday. The play is written by Bob Larbey, who, along with John Esmonde, penned the hugely successful comedy series The Good Life and Ever Decreasing Circles. The Jaywalkers have produced many critically-acclaimed shows with in the area. The event will be hosted by Gargrave Pantomime Group and tickets are available in advance from the library for £7.

Annual meeting: The annual parish meeting will be held in the village hall on Monday, May 18, at 7pm. This is the meeting for the electors of the parish and refreshments will be served. All village organisations are invited to give a brief summary of their activities over the past year.

Football defeat: Horton FC were defeated in the Craven FA Morrison Cup Final on Friday by four goals to two against Ingleton FC. They entered the game as underdogs playing in their first-ever District Association Cup and did themselves proud with a spirited performance. The village can be proud of the large support that helped create a wonderful atmosphere. Ingleton had much of the early possession taking the lead on the quarter hour when Man of the Match Joe Towers scored the first of his hat-trick goals. However the Horton team stuck to their task and were rewarded with an equalising goal on the stroke of half time when Danny Richardson coolly slotted home a penalty kick. Two early second half goals gave Ingleton the control but Horton pulled a goal back when substitute Kyle Frik headed home a corner on 75 minutes. However Ingleton clinched the cup with a fourth goal on 82 minutes. It was a night that will live long in the memory and was reward for the dedication of long-serving club members - secretary Ray Heaton and manager Steve Richardson - and all those players and followers who have faithfully stood by the club. Horton’s last hour of glory was back in the 1940s when they won the Division One League Cup.

Heather gave an enthralling talk about how she came to be a nanny to the children of a Saudi Arabian prince. Brenda Shuttleworth gave a vote of thanks, saying that Heather was one of the best speakers the group has ever had. The next meeting is on Wednesday when Elaine Beresford will talk about poetry.

Young Farmers: Last Monday’s meeting was dairy judging at Mr Harrison’s farm in Elslack. Kwezana link: Pupils in Settle have been explaining to friends in Kwezana about their digital leaders. These are pupils who stay behind after Friday assemblies to use computers to help improve the school. The digital leaders are all in class five and have been involved in making podcasts, looking at bee bots (small machines with wheels that you can move by pressing a button) and doing photo-stories to send to Kwezana. It is hoped that following an exchange visit by one of Settle staff to Kwezana in the summer it will be possible to start a similar scheme in Kwezana school to improve and maintain communications between the two school communities.

Story time: A children’s story time, aimed at pre-school children and their carers, will take place every Tuesday at 2.45pm in the new library at Limestone View. There will be colouring, crafts and book-themed activities.

Housing bus: The Yorkshire Housing bus will be in Whitefriars car park between 10am and noon every Tuesday, offering a range of free advice. This week, there will be information available about saving money and saving energy.

Guided walks: On Saturday, the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Railway will lead a circular walk from Kirkby Stephen, taking in Crosby Garrett. This is a 15-mile moderately strenuous walk and will leave Kirkby Stephen Station at 10.34am. On the same day, there will also be an eight-mile moderate walk to view bluebells in Flakebridge woods. This walk will depart from Appleby at 10.08am. On Sunday, there will be a five-mile geology walk on a circular route around Kirkby Stephen. This is an easy route and the focus will be on looking at evidence of the shallow tropical seas and hot baking deserts which existed here in ancient times. The walk departs from Kirkby Stephen at 10.56am. No reservation is necessary, but all participants should ensure that they are appropriately clothed, carry a packed lunch where required and have suitable footwear. Messy church: The next messy church session will take place in St John’s Hall next Sunday, May 17, from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. The session provides a time for families, of all ages, to have fun together.

Photographic Group: Settle Photographic Group will meet at Townhead Court on Monday, May 18, from 7.30pm. The first half of the evening will be a gallery on the theme of Close Up Photography. The second half will be a talk by Margaret Smith on the subject of Size Matters. This will focus on issues relating to how to adjust image size and resolution.

Silsden Linda Berry, 01535 654643 Civic Society: The final meeting of the season for Silsden Civic Society will be held at the Methodist Church next Thursday, May 14, when Rod Fisher will give a talk entitled the Great Care Home Scandal. Doors open at 7pm with the talk commencing at 7.30pm.

Charity event: The Proms on the Farm team’s next fundraiser will be a Grand Charity Event featuring the Big Bang playing live music from the 60s to be held at Sunnybank Social Club tomorrow at 8.30pm. Admission is £6 and tickets are available from Twiggs Newsagents or on the door. Proceeds will go to Sue Ryder Manorlands and the Methodist Church.

Soul night: Silsden’s Northern Soul/Motown night will be on Saturday from 8pm to late at the Sports Club bar. Admission is £3 either by ticket or pay on the door.

Amnesty meeting: Silsden Amnesty Group will meet in the Methodist Church, Kirkgate, on Monday at 7.30pm. New members are welcome.

Ladies’ Circle: The April meeting of Ladies’ Circle was very well attended as the speaker was Ian Dewhirst with his talk, Life in the Fifties. He began by saying the title of the talk was misleading - it was about life in the 1950s and not being 50! This was the last meeting of the current programme. The next meeting will be in September.

Skipton Lacemakers: Fifteen members attended the April meeting of the Craven Guild of Lacemakers. It was also the AGM. It was a successful year with increased membership. A new chairman, Hazel Calcott, was voted in. Hazel was also recently elected as chairman to the National Lace Guild. A new office of vice-chairman was created and Kate Bond was proposed. Two articles were read out from the Craven Herald, 1987. One referred to the first meeting at the Swadford Centre and the second setting out the aims of the group in helping each other and trying to learn more about lace. These are still the aims today. Advanced Motorists: The Skipton and Craven Advanced Motorists Group held its annual meeting last Tuesday at the Three Links Club. The chairman, Bob Rowles, reported that the past year had been a very good one for the group. There had been some interesting meetings and a number of new members had successfully taken the Advanced Driving Test following guidance from group mentors. The group was in a sound financial position. Officers elected were: chairman, Bob Rowles; vice chairman,Brian Howlett; secretary, Jim Keighley; and treasurer, Jane Parkin. Following the AGM, there was a humorous talk by Alan Bonson, of JAK Coaches, Keighley, called It Shouldn’t Happen to a Coach Operator. The May meeting will be a visit to the Lancashire Motor Museum. All are welcome. The rector will also officiate at the 6pm Evensong service on Sunday, while the Rev Jenny Smith will take the 8am Holy Communion. Toddle into Church – the special weekly time for pre-school children and their carers – is at 2pm on Tuesday. This is a very friendly and informal session. The rector and curate, the Rev Heather Houlton, will lead the mid-week Holy Communion service at 10.45am on Wednesday. The Women’s Fellowship Group will also meet on Wednesday, at 7.30pm in the Vestry Rooms, and newcomers are welcome. Please check the notice boards at the church gates for details of Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer, which are held at 9am and 4pm, Monday to Saturday.

Steeton Methodist Church: Steeton Methodist Church will hold a coffee morning on Saturday from 10am until noon.There will be the usual homemade cake stall, plants, a raffle and a quiz. All proceeds are for Christian Aid. Please come along and bring a friend. On Sunday, at 10.30am, there will be a celebration of the Junior Church’s anniversary, which will be led by Janet Clark. Everyone is welcome.

Upper Wharfedale Sheila Denby, 01756 752605 Women’s Institute: Threshfield and Linton WI enjoyed a talk by a representative from Yorkshire Air Ambulance, who described the work of the service from its new base and the need for continuing fundraising for this valuable service. A raffle was held in support of the YAA. The May meeting will be on May 13 at Linton Institute when Diane Mackridge will talk about the work of Grassington in Bloom.

Helping Hands: The Helping Hands charity will hold its annual general meeting in the meeting room at St Margaret Clitherow Church, Threshfield, on Tuesday from 11am.

Open day: Upper Wharfedale Field Society will hold an open day in Kilnsey Village Hall on Sunday, May 24, from 2pm. Afternoon teas will be available.

Coffee morning: The Kings Head, Kettlewell, is hosting coffee mornings in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance on the first Wednesday of each month from 10am to noon. Admission is £2.

Hall lunch: The May luncheon in Kettlewell Village Hall will take place on Thursday, May 21. Anyone wishing to attend should call Anne Staniforth by noon on Monday, May 18.

Annual meeting: Litton Parish will hold its annual meeting at the Queens on Tuesday, May 19, at 7.30pm.

Parish council: Buckden Parish Council will meet in the institute on Monday at 8pm.

Spring clean: St Peter’s Church, Rylstone, will hold an outdoor spring clean on Saturday from 10am to noon. Volunteers are being sought to help with the gardening work. Coffee, juice and cake will be provided.

Barn dance: The Friends of Cracoe School will hold a Wild West barn dance in the village hall on Saturday from 7pm to midnight. Tickets cost £15 and include support, a bar and a live band, with callers.

Toddlers: Kettlewell Toddlers meet in the village hall on Fridays from 10.30am to noon during term-time. Children from newborns up to school age are welcome, along with their parents and grandparents. The cost is £2.

Volunteers needed: St Mary’s, Kettlewell, is in need of a couple of volunteers to clean the church. It takes a couple of hours on a Friday and anyone willing to help is asked to contact Sue Nelson on 760887.

Wigglesworth Community Centre: A whist and domino drive was held at the community centre. Winners were: whist - E Turner, M Wellock, D Hogg, B Garnett, M Metcalfe and S Hogg; dominoes - G Berry, P Metcalfe, H Wolfendon, K Knowles, A Sutcliffe and M Briggs; There will be a table top sale on Sunday from 10am to 3pm when Katie Powl will have her hair cut and will donate it to the Little Princess Trust.
