Austwick: Derek and Celia Coultherd, 015242 51215: Bowling Club: Austwick Bowling Club went to Slaidburn last Tuesday for a very pleasant evening of bowls and even though members lost by five games to two everyone said how much they had enjoyed their evening. On Saturday, Austwick hosted the Home Guard Trophy - a four way competition between Austwick, Bentham, Ingleton and Burton-in-Lonsdale. Ingleton won with 186 points, Bentham was second with 178, Austwick third with 153 and Burton had 106. This Saturday, there is a club competition playing for the Pye Trophy and all names must be in by 1.30pm please.

Church news: On Sunday, Holy Communion will be celebrated at Austwick at 9.30am while evensong services will be held at Keasden at 6.45am and Eldroth at 7pm. On Tuesday, a PCC fundraising committee meeting at the vicarage at 2pm.

Afternoon Fellowship: The next meeting of the Austwick Church Afternoon Fellowship will take place on Wednesday at 2pm and will be an afternoon garden party at The Knoll, Austwick.

Barnoldswick: St Andrew’s: St Andrew’s Methodist Church will hold its last Messy Church before the summer holidays from 3pm to 5pm on Saturday. They will be linking Father’s Day and the story of the Prodigal Son with crafts, an interactive story, party games and party food. Children must be accompanied by an adult. There is no charge, but donations are welcome to cover costs.

Bolton Abbey: Priory Church: On Sunday, the services are 8am Communion (said), 10.30am Sung Eucharist and 4.30pm Choral Evensong led by the Priory Choir. On Wednesday there is a said communion service at 10am. All services are the Book of Common Prayer. Also, on Wednesday at 8pm, there will be a Grassington Festival concert given by Armonico Consort.

Choral visit: On Saturday, Harrogate Male Voice Choir will perform at the Priory Church at 4.30pm. Earlier, the choir will give a concert at Ripon Cathedral at 10.30am, Ilkley Bandstand at 1pm and The Clarke Foley Centre at 2.30pm. The musical director is Patrick Lee and the accompanist is Avril Leeming. The choir is singing for pleasure and admission at each venue will be free of charge. Parking is at the Priory Church will be on the green outside the Priory.

Singing Children: The Singing Children of Africa will give a concert in the Priory on Tuesday at 7pm. They are travelling from Kenya and will be in the UK for eight weeks for an educational, cultural and musical tour. They are sponsored by the charity Educate the Kids who have funded the installing of electricity, drilled bore-holes and introduced school feeding programmes. Admission is free and there will be a retiring collection.

Bradley: Liz Zieboll, 01535 636369: Film Club: The next Film Club night is on Monday when a selection of short films will be shown, to include Pixar, Laurel and Hardy and Buster Keaton (U). School news: Congratulations go to the year five and six cricket team, which performed outstandingly in the second round of the schools tournament. It won every game and moves on to represent Craven District in York later this month. Well done to Tilly and Archie for baking and selling buns outside their house to raise money for the Rays of Sunshine charity - they made a grand total of £35.35. As a thank you for asking for money for Rays of Sunshine instead of birthday presents Erin was given tickets to see a show at the Royal Albert Hall, which she found very exciting. Year five and six pupils completed a Bikeability course last week. Everyone is welcome at the Friends of Bradley School coffee morning to be held at 9am next Friday, June 26, in the school hall. The school’s sports day and summer fair will be held on Saturday, July 4.

Family Day: The Family Show Day will take place on Sunday, September 6. The committee is holding a competition for children to design a poster to advertise the day - entries should be A4 size and can be handed in at school.

Scandimoot: The return of Scandinavian music and dance group Scandimoot to the area was a great success. The group focused on Norwegian music and dance this year, with performances at Victoria Hall, Settle, and St James’ Church, Clapham. If all goes well, Clapham hopes to welcome the group back in 2016.

Rubbish collection: Thanks go to the ten volunteers who helped to tidy up the village and clear the litter that had built up along the grass verges during the winter months. A range of items were collected The final total was 18 sacks of rubbish in two hours of hard work, which were collected the day after by Craven District Council.

Pet Rescue: A total of £360 was raised for Bentham Pet Rescue at a quiz which took place in Clapham Village Hall. The group would like to thank everyone who supported this event.

Coniston Cold: St Peter’s Church: On Sunday there will be Holy Communion from 9.30am.

Young Farmers: Last Tuesday Coniston Young Farmers travelled to Settle College for The Settle District YFC annual sports. Members joined fellow clubs Burton, Rathmell and Lawkland for an evening of traditional races and rivalry. Coniston stalwarts Hannah, Jodie and James Bolland and club chairman Cameron Walton put in some solid performances in the distance races to help Coniston secure victory on the night and lift the sports trophy.

Cononley: Joan Nicholson, 01535 630872: St John’s: On Sunday, there will be a service of Holy Communion (Prayer Book) at 8am. This will be followed by a service of Holy Communion at 11am, led by the vicar, the Rev John Peet. The sermon will be given by the Rev Paul Corrie. This Saturday, Cononley Gala will be on the sports field in the afternoon and evening. The Friends of Bradford Cathedral are visiting Holy Trinity Church, Skipton, on Sunday from 3.30pm with a tour, refreshments and then Evensong at 6pm.

Cononley Gala: The village gala takes place on Saturday. The procession will set out from the Green at 1.30pm and there will be lots of familiar and new attractions to keep visitors entertained throughout the afternoon. Show date: After the success of last year, the Make It, Bake It, Grow It show will be staged at Cononley Village Institute on Saturday, September 5.

Cowling: Anniversary pilgrimage: Next Saturday, June 27, as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, there will be a pilgrimage round the village of Cowling, visiting sites of former worship, led by the Rev Nigel Ogley. The walk will begin at 3pm at Ickornshaw Chapel, now flats in the centre of Ickornshaw. It will finish at the site of the Bar Chapel (now Pinnacle View) and nearby graveyard, at the crossroads with the main road as you go uphill to Pinnacle View. En route, pilgrims will visit the former Baptist chapel in Middleton and the site of the old Tin Tab, where St Andrew’s now stands. Those taking part are expected to arrive in the area at about 4.15pm. All welcome for all or part of the walk.

St Andrew’s: On Tuesday, there will be a pet service at St Andrew’s Church, starting at 6 pm. All furry (feathered or scaled) friends are welcome to come, with their human family. If your pet does not like to be confined, just bring a picture instead and it can still take part in the service. The service will be led by the Rev Saidu Kanu.

Embsay-with-Eastby: Andrew Wilson, 01756 790197: Charity collection: The collection for Christian Aid in Embsay and Eastby during Christian Aid week realised £1,593.20 and of this £670 was gift aided. It was a superb result. A big thank you goes to all who donated and to the loyal band of collectors without whom the collection would not be possible.

Embsay churches: On Sunday, the Methodist Chapel’s 10.30am service will be led by the Rev Peter Gray while at St Mary’s Church there will be a family communion service. On Tuesday, St Mary’s will hold a communion service at 10.30am and, between 2pm and 4pm, it will be open for tea, coffee, home baking and conversation. Carpet bowls: To reflect the current bus timetables, the carpet bowls club now meets in the village hall on Mondays and Fridays between 10.15am and 12.15pm. New members are always welcome.

Bingo night: Embsay Cricket Club’s next bingo night will be on Saturday night in the Village Hall with eyes down at 7.30pm. All are welcome and all proceeds go towards the costs of running the club.

Community library: The children’s Favourite Book Character drawing competition was lovely and the winners were Hattie Lee with The Worst Witch, Helena Lee (Cinderella), Ella Garforth (Little Miss Scary) and Emily Loweth (Peter Rabbit). They all received a £10 book token and one of Shona’s special biscuits.

Women’s Institute: June’s meeting was very special and the village hall had a palpable buzz around it. There were upwards of 50 people in the audience who had come to hear the story of two of the three Waterfall children who were brought up in Embsay and whose book Escape to Auschuwitz is the story of their family during the World War Two. It was a moving and thought-provoking evening.

Farnhill and Kildwick: Joyce Wood, 01535 635880: St Andrew’s Church: On Sunday, there will be Holy Communion services at 8.15am and at 10am. Tea and scones will be served from 2.30pm to 4.30pm in the parish rooms and the church will also be open to visitors.

Farnhill Methodists: There will be no service at church this Sunday. The coffee morning held last Saturday raised £125.75 for church funds and £30 for the Gambia Schools Trust.

Village Pump: The Village Pump - the over 50s group - will meet in the lower hall at Farnhill Methodist Church on Wednesday from 2pm to 3.30pm.

Summer fair: The summer fair organised by St. Andrew’s Church, Kildwick School and Kildwick and Farnhill Institute takes place next Saturday, June 27 at the church and on church green from 11am to 2 pm. There will be many stalls and activities on offer and raffle tickets can be purchased beforehand or on the day. There are many excellent raffle prizes including a £100 Amazon voucher. Entries for the children’s competition and for the adult competitions for a lemon sandwich cake and/or five savoury scones should be entered by 11am on the Saturday morning.

Gargrave: Sally Jennings, 01756 748098: Later Life Matters: This free Later Life Matters event will be held in Gargrave Village Hall today when seven expert speakers will explain how their organisation helps solve the problems of later life. It is being run between 10am and 1.30pm and 2pm to 5.30pm.

Community Library: Tomorrow, there will be a funny film entitled The 100-year-old Man who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared. The doors in the village hall will open at 7pm and admission on the door is £5. Seating will be café style - take along your own refreshments.

Coffee morning: A coffee morning will be held between 10am and noon on Saturday in the village hall. All proceeds will be donated to Lancaster and Skipton Rail Users Group, which aims to improve the Bentham line service. There will be various stalls selling cakes, plants and books, a raffle and any gift contributions will be greatly appreciated.

St Andrew’s Church: On Sunday, the BCP Holy Communion at 8am will be followed at 10.45 by Sung Eucharist.

Hatha Yoga: A new six-week session commences at 9.30am on Wednesday in the annexe of the village hall and new members are welcome. Full tuition is provided by Corinne Docherty, a qualified British Wheel of Yoga teacher. More information can be obtained from Sally on 01756 748098.

Bingo: The next session is on Wednesday from 7.30pm in the village hall annexe. Entry is free and there are tea and biscuits served during the interval. Books are priced at 80p each and there are prizes for both a line and full house.

Annual meeting: Gargrave AFC held its annual general meeting recently. The team was congratulated on its promotion to the Premier Division and those players present were presented with their Division One runners-up trophies. Tributes were expressed over the death earlier in the year of the club president, Dennis French who had been involved with the club for more than 70 years, initially as a young lad helping with the pitch marking, then as a player, manager and club administrator. He managed a team for some years with his friend David Syms and it was proposed that David be asked to become the new president. David, like Dennis, has had a long and happy association with the club beginning with a playing career in 1952. Club members are delighted that David has accepted the invitation to become the new president. Various work was planned at the ground during the closed season; much of it will be undertaken by the players. Giggleswick: Gill O’Donnell, 01729 825639: Parish council: PC Dave Ridler. of Craven Safer Neighbourhood Team, introduced himself at the council monthly meeting. He is to liaise with the local community. He drew attention to the touring of a special exhibition about the shaping of the police service of the future and how the police is responding to the challenge of keeping communities safe. It will take place at Craven District Council’s offices in Skipton on Tuesday and Wednesday. The future of the parish rooms was also further discussed. Reassurance was given that the building is used as a community building and not parish church rooms. The council clearly reiterated its view that it is supportive of a community facility. The next meeting will be held in the parish rooms on July 7 at 7.30pm.

Primary school: Congratulations go to year pupils who worked hard during the final week before half term to produce another issue of their Giggtastic Gazette. For the first half of the Summer Term 2015, we are delighted that 38 pupils achieved 100% attendance – well done! Town Hall news: At the annual meeting of the town hall, four new trustees were appointed. They were Graham Davies, Marion Field, David Tierney and Rob Gower. Cath Gower, one of the parish council appointees, has retired due to temporary ill health, but hopes to return once she has fully recovered. Meanwhile the new parish council trustee is Rob Charlton. A coffee morning, in aid of the town hall and held at Church House, was a great success and thanks go to all who supported the event. The beginners’ ballroom and Latin classes, run by Jack and Betty Perry, have come to an end after eight weeks. The good news is that the beginners class is back, starting on Wednesday, July 1, at 6.30pm and will be followed by an improvers’ class from 7.30pm. Church concert: Lorraine Paylor, of Grassington, will star in The Essence of Eccentricity at the Grassington Congregational Church on Saturday from 3pm. Lorraine and her friends will present a collection of comic songs, written and performed in the late 19th century and early 20th century by music hall artiste Nellie Wallace. Nellie was an actress, dancer, comedienne and songwriter. She died in 1948 at the age of 78. Tickets cost £5 and proceeds will go to Cancer Research UK.

Moor walk: The Grassington Moor lead mining industry will be explained along a four-mile guided walk on Saturday from 2pm to 5pm, meeting at Yarnbury car park. The walk will be led by the national park authority’s archaeologist. To book a place, contact 01756 752691.

Youth AGM: Hellifield Youth will hold its annual general meeting on Wednesday at 4.30pm at the Wesley Centre on Haw Grove. The club has been closed for a period of time and this meeting could provide an opportunity to reopen the club if the necessary volunteers can be found to help on a rota basis. The club, if it reopens, may not be on a Thursday in the future.

A federation quiz heat will be held at the Catholic Church Hall in Settle on Friday, September 18 and the cost is £7.50 each. The group rally will be held at the Ingleborough Community Centre on July 3 at 7.30pm, when Lippy Logic will entertain. The spring council meeting on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, will be at the Pavilions, Harrogate. A garden walk with tea will take place on Thursday, July 16, at 2pm. Each committee member was presented with a pretty notebook and a decorated pen from India for all their hard work during the past year. A delicious home-made supper was enjoyed before Sue Fitzsimmons showed slides taken on her recent holiday in India, explaining the customs and traditions of that country. Sue Brown thanked everyone for a very entertaining evening and a box of chocolates was presented to Sue Fitzsimmons. Jane Bradley will give a talk at the July 13 meeting on Willow and Rush Weaving and the competition will be for a local photograph.

Harold showed slides and talked about life in the 30s, 40s and 50s which brought back lots of memories for the 25 members who were present. A canal boat trip from Skipton to Gargrave has been arranged for August 5 and the cost is £15 including lunch. Guided walks: There will be two guided walks arranged by Friends of Settle-Carlisle line on Saturday. The first is a circular 15-mile strenuous walk via High Cup Nick. This will leave Appleby at 10.47am. The second walk is an 11-mile moderately strenuous walk from Ribblehead to Hawes leaving Ribblehead at 10.06 and returning by service bus from Hawes to Garsdale. No reservation is necessary these walks but all participants should ensure that they are appropriately clothed, carry a packed lunch where required and have suitable footwear. Victoria Hall: John Helliwell, the saxophone player in Supertramp, brings his jazz band Crème Anglaise to Victoria Hall tomorrow and, on Saturday, Ferocious Dog brings its own take on traditional celtic folk to Settle, combining traditional instruments - fiddles, whistles, mandolins - with a bit of raw, buzzsaw rock’n’roll attitude. Houghton Weavers conclude the month on next Saturday, June 27, with an appearance as part of their 40th anniversary tour. The guest artistes at the First Sunday Folk event on July 5 will be The Mighty Doonans. There will be a raffle and a tombola throughout the day and the community is invited to come along and meet the residents and staff.

Big Breakfast: The next Big Breakfast event will take place on Saturday at 8.30am when the speaker will be Alex Ladds. Alex is a teacher and chaplain at Giggleswick School. Fundraising dance: Blackpool Tower organist John Bowdler will play at a fundraising dance on behalf of Settle Amateur Operatic Society on Saturday at Ingleton Community Centre. Settle Orchestra: Settle Orchestra’s summer concerts will take place at the Richard Whiteley Theatre on Saturday, and on 27 June at Christ Church, Skipton, next Saturday, June 27. Both concerts will commence at 7.30pm and the programme will feature the Overture to The Thieving Magpie by Rossini as well as works by Brahms and Schubert. Tickets cost £10 and are available via Cave and Crag, Bentham Post Office and Skipton Camera Centre Folk Club: The next Three Peaks Folk Club night will take place at Settle Social Club on Saturday and will be a special charity night. The evening will start at 8.30pm and in addition to the usual floor singers there will be guest performers Morfan Heights. The MC for the night will be Andrew Clayton.

Open gardens: This year’s open gardens event will take place on Saturday and Sunday. A number of gardens will be open. Tickets cost £6 per day or £10 for a two-day ticket. Tickets are available from Settle Tourist Information Centre, Field and Home or via 01729 822090. The gardens are open from 11am to 5pm on Saturday and noon to 5pm on Sunday.

Baking masterclass: Age UK will host a breadmaking masterclass at Townhead Court on Tuesday. The session will commence at 10.30am and will run until 1.30pm, with some volunteers in the audience having an opportunity to get hands on experience with master breadmaker. Tramps: The next film in the foreign film series at Victoria Hall will take place on Wednesday at 7.45pm. In Japanese with English subtitles, Like Father, Like Son is the story of two children, swapped at birth who try to find their birth families. Admission is £5.

The Folly: On Wednesday, there will be a pottery workshop led by Lee Cartledge, of Bentham Pottery. This event is a follow up on his recent talk about the life of Richard Bateson, the Last Potter of Black Burton. The cost is £20 including all materials and the firing of your finished pot. Numbers limited so make sure you book by phoning 01729 822893 Health event: The board of directors of Airedale Hospital are holding their next meeting at Victoria Hall on Wednesday. The meeting will take place between 10.30am and 12.30pm and will include a presentation about plans for health care in the Settle area and will also include a question and answer session where members of the public can put questions and concerns about the provision to the board. Between 1pm and 3pm, there will be a health fair with a number of participating groups providing information. There will also be an opportunity to talk to a director at one of the listening sessions.

Hog roast: Settle Rotary Club’s annual hog roast will take place at Eldroth Barn, Eldroth, next Sunday, June 28, between 1pm and 5pm. Gallery exhibition: Call Me, the new exhibition at the Gallery on the Green, will run from next Saturday, June 27, to August 15 and looks at the nostalgic days of the phone box. Ellen Bell and Jo Hamill’s new installation is an elegant, yet whimsical written collage of notable literary telephone dialogues. Bell and Hamill’s transparent book-like structure plays with the notion that lines of communication are sometimes clear, but at other times obscure.

Charity dance: The next charity dance will take place at St Mary and St Michael Parish Hall on Saturday, July 4. This will run from 8pm to 11.30pm. Attendees are asked to contact 01729 823259 or 824038 prior to Friday July 3. All proceeds will go to St John’s Methodist Church’s 120+ project.

Mysterious walks: Find out more about the mysterious events in Settle on a guided walk visiting hidden locations linked with strange happenings and unusual occurrences and telling tales of the unexplained. Author Nigel Mortimer will be operating guided walks every second and fourth Saturday at 1.30pm and 3.30pm and on Tuesdays at 5pm. The walks last approximately 90 minutes and depart from Whitefriars car park. The cost is £5 per person.

Women’s Institute: President Mary Hindle warmly welcomed two new members. The town council has approved the placing of a bench on the children’s play area. The bench is being donated by the institute to mark the national WI centenary. There will be a visit to Tennants of Leyburn on Wednesday, August 5, for a tour and afternoon tea. Transport will be by cars. The next outing for the Walking Group will be next Thursday, June 25. A bottle stall will be held at Clapham Street Market on July 26. The speaker was Linda Sawley with a light hearted and humorous talk on Growing Old Disgracefully. It ended with members singing along to a funny song to the tune of a Julie Andrews’ song. She was thanked by Mary Hindle.

The sales will take place on Sundays June 21 and 28, July 19 and 26, August 16 and 23, September 6, 20 and 27 and October 4. They will run from 7am to noon.

DeParty: The first event of the Grand DeParty takes place on July 4 with a Grand Day Out in Silsden park. Various events will take place at different times throughout the day. If you wear flat-soled shoes you may try out your bowling skills with Silsden Bowling Club and also improve your cycling skills on a fun course with Becycling. Then Silsden Band will play at 12.30pm followed by relay races from 2.30pm for which you should turn up in good time to enter. Bring your own baton. There will be a prize for the best decorated baton and fancy dress is optional for the runners. There is also something for dog lovers, a bicycle maintenance workshop with Halfords, children’s tennis, penalty shoot-out competition, scavenger hunts for younger children. Later, St James’ Church will host a Dutch evening for which is £5 for adults and £2.50 for children.

Skipton: Dalesway WI: This month’s meeting was again well attended and most enjoyable when Stephen Watson demonstrated the art of Origami with an amazing display. Each member took part and made a gift box using only two sheets of paper. Several members spoke of their memorable day at Buckingham Palace which they had attended the previous day. The next meeting is the annual meeting on Wednesday, July 3, at 7.30pm at the Three Links Club. It will bed followed by a talk by Pat Osborne on The life of Clarice Cliff. Visitors are welcome. Members are reminded to check their emails with regard to Sheep Day on Sunday, July 5.

Holy Trinity: Sunday services at Holy Trinity Church – at the top of the High Street – will follow the usual pattern with 8am Holy Communion, followed by Parish Communion at 9.45am and a Choral Evening Service at 6pm. During the afternoon Friends of Bradford Cathedral will be visiting, and there will be a Traidcraft stall on both Saturday and Sunday. A photographic exhibition has just opened at the back of the church. Every Picture Tells a Story features images of the Dales and historic buildings in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It will run until July 4. Toddle into Church – for the youngest members of the family with their parents, grandparents or carers – is at 2pm on Tuesday and members of the Women’s Fellowship get together for their meeting on Wednesday at 7.30pm in the Vestry Room. Morning Prayer is said Monday to Saturday at 9am, unless there is information to the contrary on the notice boards attached to the church gates. And a reminder, to all those who attend Happy Hour on the last Thursday morning of each month. The café is currently closed for holidays and, consequently, this coffee group will not meet until next month.

Lacemakers: Thirteen members attended the May Guild. The new chairman, Hazel Calcott, opened the meeting and welcomed everyone. Another member, Liz Walker, was recently voted onto the National Lace Guild’s executive committee. Craven Guild and the National Lace Guild will be represented at the Yarndale festival at Skipton auction market in September, demonstrating and promoting the craft. Association meeting: At the meeting of the Skipton and District Royal Naval Association last week, Armed Forces Day was on the agenda. Information that the Newmarket Street will be closed on the day originally allocated - Sunday, June 21 - has made a change of plans necessary.

Sutton-in-Craven Gardens talk: At the June meeting of Sutton-in-Craven WI, Andrew Willocks, the nursery team leader at Harlow Carr Gardens, gave an interesting talk on changes at the gardens. The group is holding a cream tea on Saturday, from 2pm to 4pm, at Sutton Baptist Church. Members are busy baking cakes and scones.

Phil Judkins will be talking about Sea, Land and Underwater - The Navy in World War One. Members and non-members are welcome.

Scarecrow workshop: A scarecrow workshop will be held next Sunday, June 28, from 3pm to 7pm, in Kettlewell Village Hall. This is the 21st festival and the organiser want to make it the best ever.

Transition day: Kettlewell Primary School will hold a transition day next Thursday, June 25, when all year sixes will go to their chosen secondary school to experience life there.

Wildflower walk: The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust has organised a summer wildflower walk on Wednesday. The event is free of charge, but a donation of £15 is suggested. Wigglesworth: Peak walkers: Very strong winds made the already challenging Three Peaks Walk pretty hard going for four Wigglesworth residents who completed it in aid of the Stroke Association’s Shipley branch. David, Anne, Chris and Gaynor would like to thank everyone for their support. The final figure is yet to be announced for the full team of 20, but is over £2,000.

Community centre: Whist and dominoes, with light supper, will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday and all are welcome.
