BARNOLDSWICK: Rotary Club: Memories were stirred when David Wiseman told Barnoldswick and Earby Rotarians and guests about his Recollections of Old Barlick. Coming to the town aged six when his parents bought a shop in Rainhall Road, he reeled off the names of citizens, characters and shop owners of an era long gone. He spoke of the good influence York Street Church School played in his life, of playing in back streets, of church and community events, the cinemas, dances, Whit walks and visits of celebrities – Wilfred Pickles held his radio “have a go” show in town. He told how on a Saturday evening he would pick up a bundle of the evening sports papers, The Pink, from the railway station and sell them on in the town’s pubs and clubs. His father drove Wilds’ coaches on trips, to football matches and to watch Barnoldswick boxing hero Frank Bell.

BOL.TON ABBEY Priory Church: The services this Sunday are 8am Communion (said) and 10.30am Sung Eucharist and will be led by Prebendary Kenneth Bowler, who served in the dioceses of Derby and London, latterly as vicar of All Saints’ Fulham. He now has an active ministry in retirement in Sheffield. At 6.30pm, there will be Evening Prayer. On Wednesday, there is a said communion service at 10am.

He spoke about the Ringmaster scheme, which alerts the public (or specific sections of the public) about crimes in the area. Members were also told about the Herbert protocol, which assists carers in the event of a dementia sufferer going missing. CARLETON: Tea and history: A tea and history event will be held at St Mary’s Church on Sunday. Names and Dates: Medieval to Modern Carleton will be staged from 2.30pm to 5.30pm. Sue Wrathmell will talk about the history of the village and recent research and will take visitors on a walk through the village to show the oldest and the newest houses, the former shops, inns, the school and places of work. CLAPHAM: Rory-Joe Daniels, 015242 51135: Parish council: The owner of the former Dalesview Garage site, McConnell Homes Ltd, has submitted detailed planning drawings to Craven District Council, which were due to review the application this week. Cllr Sheridan will attend the meeting to put the parish council’s view that the development should not have an electronic gate at its entrance. The parish council is investigating the possibility of obtaining a community defibrillator and needs to recruit a group of volunteers willing to be trained in CPR. A complaint was received about the amount of dog fouling in Clapham especially around the waterfall area. The majority of dog owners are very considerate but the council would like to remind everyone to make use of the dog poo bins in the village. The parish council meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month (except December) and meetings take place in the village hall, starting at 7.30pm.

Street fair: The sun shone for Clapham’s annual street fair, making it a great day. There was an amazing variety of stalls, a classic car display, music from the Jukebox Junkies and the Oak Quintet, dancing from Crook Morris from Kendal and a children’s tent run by Bethel Chapel. The climax of the day was, as ever, the duck race.

Village hall: A big thank you goes to everyone who supported the duck race at the recent street fair. A record number of ducks were sold. The village hall committee appreciates the support given to one of its biggest fundraising events that helps to keep the hall and its facilities at their current high standard. Classes are open to all residents of Earby, Kelbrook, Salterforth, Barnoldswick and Thornton and entry is free. Admission is free.

St Peter’s: Thanks go to everyone who supported the church’s garden party, which raised £300. The service at 10.30am on Sunday will be led by Frances Oliver. On Monday there will be the usual gentle exercise class at 1.30pm. On Wednesday there is a church lunch, starting at noon. There is no set charge and donations are welcome.

Horton Café: The next Horton Community Café will take place in the village hall annexe on Tuesday between 2pm and 4pm. There will be a range of activities, informal learning activities and support in a café-style atmosphere. The activities will include craft workshops, exercise activities, informal advice sessions and much more. Come along and enjoy a relaxing time with refreshments.

Poster competition: Thanks to PCSO Ruth Pearson, copies of the Clean Up After Your Dog posters have now been put up throughout Embsay and Eastby. There are four different posters for you to look out for, drawn by primary school pupils Freya Mitchell, Lila Harris, Emily Preston and Max Seddon.

History walk: Today, the Upper Wharfedale Heritage Group will be walking the road to Bolton Abbey through Embsay-with-Eastby’s historic countryside. The walk begins at the car park on Main Street at 2pm and costs £1 for members and £2 for non-members.

Village Show: The annual Embsay-with-Eastby Village Show will be held on Saturday, September 5, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Entry will be £2 for adults and free for children. Refreshments will be served and prizes and trophies will be presented about 4pm. It is not too late to think about entering and schedules are available at the Post Office, Library and other outlets. Flea market: The next flea market is on Sunday between 10am and 4pm in the village hall. There will be numerous stalls displaying bric-a-brac, antiques, plants, crafts and homemade produce. Entry is 50p and refreshments will be available throughout the day.

St Andrew’s Church: On Sunday, St Andrew’s will hold a BCP Holy Communion at 8am and a morning service at 10.45am.

Summer fun day: A summer fun day will be held from 10am on Monday in the village hall annexe. There is a £3 entry fee and the fun will be based on a seaside theme with sand pit, paddling pool and ice cream. The morning is aimed at toddlers aged between 0 and five years but older siblings are welcome to come and help.

Women’s Institute: The WI will meet on Wednesday from 7.30pm in the village hall annexe. The speaker is Lisa Milnor who will be talking about A Mindful Way to Wellbeing and all are welcome to attend.

Garden party: A garden party will take place next Saturday, August 15, between 1pm and 4pm. There will be entertainment by Stan Grey, pork and apple sandwiches, a tombola, cake stall, bottle stall and raffle. Jumble sale: Donations are being sought for a jumble sale to be held at Gargrave Village Hall on Saturday, September 19, from 10am. The entrance fee is 20p per person and donations towards the sale can be accepted at Gargrave Village Hall on the following days: this Saturday, next Saturday and Saturday, August 29, between 10am and noon and Friday, September 18, between 2pm and 6pm. Please note that only items that can be easily carried by one person will be accepted.

High note: The Lancashire-based Nostalgia Swing Band played to a capacity audience at Gargrave Village Hall on Sunday afternoon. The 17-piece band with lead singer Beverley played a range of songs from the 30s, 40s and 50s. Special memories were brought back by tunes from Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra and other famous names and some couples took to the floor. Beverley was both an entertaining compere and a good singer. The band comprised five saxophones, four trumpets and four rhythm, with the youngest member aged 14 years and the oldest 88 years. Homemade afternoon tea was served in the interval and a really enjoyable afternoon was had by all. The next live music event at the hall is the popular annual return of The Swing Commanders band, who will be playing on Friday, October 30. Horticulture trip: Grassington and District Horticultural Society members Mary Vineall and Viv Tywang arranged a coach trip to Newby Hall and Gardens. The society enjoyed a guided tour of the house and gardens, which included a visit to the current dolls house exhibition. Tea on the terrace rounded off a pleasurable trip.

Gills Top: Anchor’s Gills Top care home, in Scar Street, will hold a coffee morning tomorrow from 10.30am.

Coffee morning: Church House will host a coffee morning on behalf of the Friends of St Michael’s Church, Linton, on Saturday from 9.30am.

Garden party: Christian Aid benefited from a garden party at the Hardy Meadows home of Anne Marsden. It was organised by Churches Together and included coffee, homemade lunches and afternoon teas.

The plant and produce stall did a roaring trade, adding £28 to HAAGA funds.

HORTON-IN-RIBBLESDALE: Caroline Thompson, 01756 749235: St Oswald’s: There will be a service of morning prayer at St Oswald’s today to mark the 70th anniversary of Hiroshima. It will commence at 9.30am. A festival will be held in the church this weekend. An invitation is extended to everyone in the parish to go along tomorrow at 7.30pm to view the plans for work in the church. It includes repairs to the church tower, re-ordering of the west end of the church and fitting a toilet in the old hearse house. Wine and cheese will be available. Art in the Aisles will take place on Saturday from 10am to 4pm when there will be a variety of fine quality crafts for sale. The Saggy Bottom Boys, a local band, will play live blue grass music from 7.30pm. Refreshments will be available and admission is £7.50 per person. The conclusion of the festival weekend will be the ringing of church bells at 9am on Sunday, followed by a Festival Eucharist at 9.30am with preacher Kathleen Kinder and a walk, which will end back at the church for a Jacob’s Join lunch.

LAWKLAND: Young Farmers: Young Farmers met at Pine Lake, Carnforth, for banana boating. Last Sunday, the club hosted sheepdog trails at the Taylors, Wenningside. Next week’s meeting is mass stock judging at Keasden Head at 7.30pm.

SETTLE: Gill O’Donnell, 01729 825639: Guided walks: There will be guided walks arranged by Friends of Settle-Carlisle line this week. No reservation is necessary but all participants should ensure that they are appropriately clothed. The first walk is on Saturday and goes along the Ribble Way. This is an 11-mile moderate walk, departing from Horton-in-Ribblesdale at 9.21am. Also on Saturday, there will be a 14-mile strenuous walk in Mossdale, leaving Dent at 10.16am and returning from Garsdale, and a 15-mile strenuous walk from Armathwaite to Lazonby, taking in Long Meg Stone Circle. It will leave Armathwaite at 11.15am, returning from Lazonby and Kirkoswald on the late train. On Sunday, there is a walk from Gunnerside to Reeth along the River Swale. This is a six-mile easy walk which connects with the service bus. The party leaves Ribblehead at 10.27am.

Tot Lord Trail: Richard Whinray will guide people along The Tot Lord Settle Town Trail, which is an interesting local history tour of Settle, following in the footsteps of the town’s famous son, Tot Lord. Tours will take place every Wednesday in August, meeting outside Settle Town Hall Tourist Information Centre at 6.30pm. The walk will finish at approximately 8.15pm. There will be a charge of £4 per person, with all proceeds being donated to the NSPCC. Firm footwear is recommended and waterproofs may be necessary. Songs of Praise: Churches Together in Settle and District are holding a Songs of Praise event on Sunday at Settle Parish Church, in the grounds if fine! The event commences at 3pm. Refreshments will be available afterwards Tails on Trails: Join Dalehead Veterinary Group and Peaks and Paws on a dog walk in aid of Guide Dogs and Hounds for Heroes. The event will take place on Sunday and will meet at Dalehead surgery on Station Road at 10am. There will be a circular walk of approximately two miles followed by a raffle and refreshments back at Dalehead. Please remember to bring poop bags.

Fun day: A rounders family fun day is being staged at Settle Cricket Club on Sunday in aid of Cancer Research. In addition to the rounders knockout tournament, there will be a barbecue, raffle, bouncy castle and cake stall. Rounders teams should register at noon so that matches can commence at 1pm. There should be nine players to a team and all players must be over 14. There should be no more than four men per team. The charge is £2 per team member. Individuals can also enter and these will be formed into teams on the day.

Food and fashion: The Falcon Manor is holding a food and fashion event on Wednesday, complete with a luncheon. Tickets cost £12.50 and there will be displays by My Vintage Style, Spirit of the Andes and Footwear Department. Bowling Club: Settle Bowling Club will hold its “non-bowlers” annual doubles competition next Sunday, August 16, starting at 11am. This competition is known as the Novice Shield and is sponsored by Settle Social Club. It is open to players of any age. Entry is £5 per pair. There are cash prizes for first, second and third place. Bowling woods are supplied by the club. Pie and peas are provided at a small cost. Photographic Group: Settle Photographic Group will once again be organising a hunt around the town for framed photographs in local shop windows from next Friday, August 14 to Wednesday, August 26. This year, Find The Photos has over 80 pictures to find and look at. They are all located around the middle of Settle and provide some interesting entertainment for both visitors and residents. Settle walk: The Royal Geographical Society and the North Craven Heritage Trust will join forces next Saturday, August 15, to showcase the landscape and history of Settle and its surrounding countryside. The event will be in two parts – an introductory illustrated talk from 11am to noon at the Quaker Meeting House in Kirkgate (admission £2.50), followed by a circular six-mile guided walk from 1pm to 5pm from the Market Place. Both talk and walk will look at unusual features of the town and the formation, history and development of the surrounding landscape. They may be enjoyed together or as individual events.The context of the walk will be introduced in the morning talk by former Craven resident Dr Tony Stephens, who developed the walk for the Royal Geographical Society. The afternoon walk will involve about 400 metres of climb, including some rough paths as well as spectacular scenery. Hill walking footwear and clothing are essential. No dogs please. This promises to be a day for visitors to sample the unique delights of North Craven – and for long-time residents to see their town in a new light.

Got to dance: North Ribblesdale Rugby Club is hosting a Strictly Got to Dance disco/dance event on Friday, August 21, in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. The evening will commence at 7.30pm and will include five-dance competitions as well as fun, frolics, and fancy dress. There will also be a pie and peas supper. SKIPTON: Holy Trinity: This week’s diary at Holy Trinity Church – at the top of Skipton High Street - is fairly quiet, nevertheless regular worship continues, of course, throughout the holiday season. If you’re one of the many holidaymakers in the town, you are most welcome to come and look round the 12th century building during the day and also to join one of the services. Check the notice board on the church gates for any daily changes, but morning prayer is normally said at 9am on weekdays. On Sunday, services begin at 8am with Holy Communion in the Lady Chapel, followed by Parish Communion at 9.45am and both will be led by the Rector, the Rev Veronica James. There will be an evening service at 6pm. Taking a short break at the end of the month, Toddle into Church for the youngest members of the congregation, is running as usual on Tuesday, from 2pm to 3.15pm in the Vestry Rooms, when Teddy Horsely will be joining the group and telling his stories. Mid-week Holy Communion on Wednesday is at 10.45am and members of the Women’s Fellowship meet in the Vestry Rooms at 7.30pm.

Bat walk: Bat species will be the focus of a short walk next Thursday, August 13, from 8pm to 10pm. It will be led by Dales Volunteers and will set off from Buckden car park. Booking is required and can be made by calling 01729 830416.

Church pilgrimage: St Oswald’s Church, Arncliffe, is hoping to join a deanery pilgrimage to Ripon Cathedral on Sunday, September 6. The trip will include evensong and a tour of the cathedral and anyone interested is asked to give their names to Patsy or Tony.

Coffee morning: A Macmillan coffee morning will be held at the Falcon Inn, Arncliffe, on Friday, September 25, from 10am to noon. Last year, the nationwide event raised £25 million.

Songs of Praise: St Michael’s Church, Hubberholme, will hold its summer Songs of Praise in Buckden Schoolroom on Sunday from 6pm.

Mobile library: The mobile library van will be in Upper Wharfedale on Wednesdays, August 12 and 26. It will be in Buckden car park from 10.30am to 12.30pm and at Kettlewell car park from 2pm to 4pm.

Manorlands money: The garden party, held at the Hetton home of Andrew and Carolyn Butt, raised almost £2,000 for Manorlands Hospice.

Scarecrow festival: Kettlewell Scarecrow Festival will run from this Saturday to next Sunday, August 16. The popular event raises money for the local church, primary school and village hall. The theme for adults is Movie Magic and the children’s trail is Stories from Roald Dahl. The event will be opened by Penny Chrissfield, of Hawkswick.
