Gargrave Cricket Club has been given a cash boost after an auction of a Fred Trueman collection of books and memorabilia raised more than expected.

The Yorkshire and England fast bowler, who died last year, amassed the collection over his years as a player and commentator.

It included signed autobiographies from some of the country's great sporting heroes, including Brian Clough and Colin Cowdrey.

A spokesman for the Nottingham based auctioneers Trevor Vennett-Smiths, said the sale went extremely well, with the majority of the lots being sold.

She said: "Many of the prices were much higher than the estimates we put on them, which often happens with legends like Fred Trueman. It also fetches more because the auction was for charity."

A number of lots went for more than double the asking price, including a signed John Major autobiography that had a reserve of £60 to £80 and was sold for £200.

The spokesman said all of the prints in the collection also sold well, with a picture of Freddie himself fetching £220.
