Detectives investigating the burglary and assault of an 89-year-old war veteran in Salterforth have today arrested 16 people.

Officers made the arrests in an operation this morning in the Blackpool area.

16 men aged between 17 and 55 years old have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary and will be interviewed at police stations in Burnley and Blackburn during the course of the day.

War veteran Bob Schofield and his wife Mollie, 87, were asleep in bed in the early hours last Monday when intruders entered their home. Mr Schofield confronted them and was beaten repeatedly, causing facial injuries. Mrs Schofield was not physically injured, but was left shocked.

The couple, who were discovered by relatives, were both taken by ambulance to Airedale Hospital where Mr Schofield remains. His wife is being cared for at a nearby care home. Their condition is said to be improving slowly.

Police believe cash and jewellery was stolen from the couple’s home.

Acting Detective Inspector Dave Groombridge, who is leading the investigation, said: “We have arrested a number of people this morning and we will be interviewing them during the course of the day.

"Having said that I would still appeal for anyone who may have information about this dreadful offence to come forward and speak to us, including those in the criminal fraternity who may be able to help. We do have a number of lines of inquiry which we are actively pursuing.”

Police say such incidents are rare but patrols have taken place in the Salterforth area to reassure the public.

Mr Schofield served in the Royal Navy and fought during World War Two, crewing escort ships on the notorious North Atlantic convoy missions from Scarpa Flow to Murmansk. During his time he dealt with enemy dive bomber attacks and ferocious weather conditions.

Mr and Mrs Schofield's son John and their daughter-in-law Dee have thanked everyone who has sent cards, flowers and messages of goodwill.
