WITH the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain upon us, this week's nostalgia picture is particularly timely.

It show air cadets from Skipton and Keighley Squadrons forming a guard of honour for Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader when he visited the Tempest Arms, Elslack, in 1981.

Sir Douglas was a fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain despite losing both his legs and almost losing his life in a flying accident in the late 1930s. He was at the Tempest Arms to give an after-dinner speech at sportsman’s event organised by the then landlord Peter Parfitt, who was a former England cricketer.

Among the cadets pictured are Ian Lewthwaite, Bob Whitehead, Ian Alderslade, Tim Boocock and Steve Coy and the adults include Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader, Peter Parfitt, Flying Officer Robert Chapman, Warrant Officer Ronnie Stott, Flight Lieutenant John Christie (who loaned the picture), and Warrant Officer Jack Calvert.
