Sir – Obviously councillors are allowed some time off, so I wouldn't have expected any of them to have been together in the council chamber to hear the laughter from Platform One at Skipton Station the other Sunday.

The subject of the laughter was that both toilets at the station are under lock and key.

The keys are obtainable from the booking office and they resemble the key to the west door of Westminster Abbey – and they are each attached to, appropriately I suppose, what appears to be a railway sleeper.

Having arrived in UK from Spain where toilets with public access are second to none, it was a surprise to me to find toilets similar to those in a third world country. And subject to Fort Knox-type security.

Hopefully the council could investigate and approach whoever is in charge of Skipton Station to make changes.

I know there are some precious things in Yorkshire, but I hardly think there is going to be a lot left behind in these station toilets which will be the target of thieves.

But people were laughing on Platform One that day, despite hopping anxiously from one foot to the other!
