Sir – It’s interesting that there has been more correspondence about the council’s management of the region’s verges recently (“Spare our verges”, Letters, July 11). Increasingly, these areas – full of wildflowers, not “weeds” –are being appreciated as beneficial to wildlife. Left alone, verges also look more attractive to many residents and visitors, than when mowers and strimmers have left them barren and yellowing.
I encourage those who would prefer North Yorkshire Council to manage our verges more sympathetically for people and wildlife to contact the council’s highways department directly.
People may also find Plantlife’s “Save our Verges” online campaign useful and interesting. Go to http://www.plantlife.org.uk/ roadvergecampaign/write_to_your_council On this website it’s possible to access a letter template to send a personal letter to the council, give the council a rating, upload “Before” and “After” photographs and share bad news stories – as well as any good ones!
C Woodall, Carleton
