Sir – If there was an award for best town council, surely Skipton would be the winner.

What a fantastic four days we have had of Yorkshire Day celebrations.

Such a wide variety of events – seaside, fun fair, music for all tastes, outdoor films, market – a true family occasion. Planned for 18 months, a tremendous amount of work must have gone into the event with many appealing touches like the Aussie life guards – dressed more for Yorkshire weather than Bondi beach I think.

Praise must be given to all the town council staff who worked so hard but in particular to both chief officer Dave Parker and town manager Brett Butler, whose passion for Skipton shines through everything that they do for the town.

One of your correspondents recently complained about the number of events in Skipton.

I think that we are lucky to have a town council that is so enthusiastic about planning them.

Skipton needs the tourists to keep it thriving – there are plenty of other destinations.

Residents alone won’t keep the market going and the cafes full.

Cafe numbers might seem excessive but there is not a rush of shops wanting to take over their places on the High Street.

Let’s all say: “Three cheers for Skipton Town Council.”

Long may they have the energy to keep up the good work.
