Sir –As nice as it was to see the spectacle of 200 mayors parading through Skipton one can’t help but think that Yorkshire Day has lost its ethos.
Yorkshire Day was thought up several years ago to commemorate the founding of the county.
It was meant like a birthday celebration for the masses to enjoy.
It has now been hijacked and turned into a jolly for town councils to spend a load of money seeing who can put the best show on. Every year the spectacle is becoming more grand.
I was very disappointed to see that a town crier from Lancashire had been brought into town who didn’t even carryout the Yorkshire day proclamation.
The proclamation is something that all Yorkshire criers perform at a given time.
It was left to a crier from Bradford to perform the duty from the old town hall steps much to the delight of the listening crowd that had gathered for the event.
It does appear that the day has lost its meaning.
