Sir – I am, of course, pleased to learn that a British Chamber of Commerce poll shows that three-quarters of company bosses support the public having a say on EU membership.
It reveals that British business is becoming more Eurosceptic but it seems from this survey that 61.4 per cent of those quizzed want Britain to remain a member with powers transferred to Westminster from Brussels.
Ah, there’s the rub. Our Prime Minister has, as we all know, promised to renegotiate the terms of Britain’s membership and hold an in-out referendum in 2017 if the Conservatives win the 2015 general election.
There are lots of problems with that promise, not least “if they win in 2015'”, but more importantly, talk of renegotiation is, in reality, a non-starter.
The club rules are not á la carte, as Dave should know as a member of the world’s most exclusive gentleman’s club.
