Sir – On Sunday I was curious as to why the Jane Tomlinson Walk for All, held annually, had no visible presence in the middle of Settle.

Starting and finishing on the Ingfield Lane Rugby Field walkers and supporters were invisible and far from the town’s refreshments after the event.

I could not believe that the town council were planning to charge them £65 to close the road across Settle Town Square, a huge charge which could have been foregone when the organisers were hardly breaking even.

So the central cafes lost business, the townsfolk and visitors hardly knew the walk was taking place and the walkers went without refreshment; none having been provided on the rugby field.

To crown it all Harrogate District Council parking attendant saw the cars on the nearby car park as a cash cow for the day and walkers setting off at 7am returned to find hefty fines charged on their cars, albeit they should have noticed the all day charge of £2.20.

Three cheers for Mike Tomlinson and all of his supporters alongside such meanness. If the walk is taken elsewhere the publicity will go with it, leaving mean little Settle where it deserves to be.
