Sir – Julian Smith MP informs us he has launched a campaign aimed at shaming Yorkshire Water into paying more tax and is encouraging all Yorkshire MPs to attend a meeting at Westminster next month to grill Yorkshire Water bosses about the amount of tax the company is paying to the Treasury (Craven Herald August, 15, 2013).
Why is Mr Smith not suggesting, or indeed campaigning, to close the tax loopholes that allow foreign based companies operating in the UK to minimalise their tax liabilities in this way rather than having to resort to shaming them into paying more tax?
It is highly unlikely that HMRC have to employ shaming tactics to extract tax dues from British registered companies?
Until he explains why those tax loopholes remain open then his campaign would appear rather superficial.
