Cowling Harlequins 36 Odsal Sedbergh A 4

This win put Cowling level on points with third-placed Odsal with two games in hand on them in the Pennine League Division Seven.

Quins started well, with man of the match Gary Nelson causing all kinds of problems. It led to new signing Jack Cawood stepping his way to the line and his wing partner Brannan Lawn added the extras. Lawn had a great day with the boot, kicking six from six.

With the hill behind them at Utley, Quins prop Dwaine Smith powered in for his first try. On the next set, Odsal had no answer to Cowling’s go-forward as Darren Greenwood dived over from dummy half.

With Tom Holland and Chris Young running hard, it was not long until Smith powered over for his second try.

Cawood, who impressed all afternoon, followed up a Brady Godfrey kick to collect and dive over before Craig Nicholson found space and darted up field to find full back Simon Burgoyne to cross for his first try of the season. Lawn’s conversion made it 36-0 at half-time.

It was not until the 65th minute that Odsal found a hole in the strong Cowling line and registered points but, with great work from Liam Mitchell and Cawood, the hosts remained in control.

Quins travel to Selby A on Saturday for a must-win game as they look to put pressure on second-placed Halton Moor.
