TWO Skipton RFC players have been selected to represent Yorkshire in this years Gill Burns County Championship.

The Skipton Roses fullback Courteney Cowgill and no8 Sarah Pate were informed of their selection on Friday 14 April after taking part in selection trails. The trails which took place during March saw 140 players take part and the Yorkshire County selection committee selected the 35 players to represent the Yorkshire Senior Women’s Squad in this years championship which takes place in May.

Courteney and Sarah joined the Roses during Covid and have both being integral in their growth and success over the last two seasons. The 2022/23 season saw the Roses crowned league champions of National Challenge 3 after an unbeaten league season and reaching the quarter finals of the RFU National Junior Cup, before losing to Liverpool St Helens, who have since progressed to the final which takes place at Twickenham on Sunday 30 April.

This season the Roses have grown to 46 registered players and 41 of those have played in a league or cup match, with 11 making their debut and finished the season with won 14, lost 1 and went on a 12 game unbeaten recorded between September to March.

The Roses vice captain, Lottie Knowles said: “This is an amazing achievement for both Sarah and Courteney and as a team and club we are enormously proud of them. We can’t wait to see them pull on the famous Yorkshire jersey. We can’t underestimate how powerful their selection will help in the continued growth and success of the Roses. It’s shown to the rest of the players, no matter how new to the game they are, anything is possible and it would be brilliant to see more of our Roses progress to getting honours at county level and beyond in the years to come."
