Chadderton 2 Barnoldswick Town 3 (after extra time)

Defender Bill Williams marked his return after major surgery by netting the winning goal in the dying minutes of extra time.

His tap in from close range enabled Barnoldswick to clinch a home quarter-final against AFC Blackpool.

They were grateful in the end to secure victory because they had earlier surrendered a two goal lead as they conceded two goals in the closing minutes for the second time in four days.

The match proved to be exciting despite the difficult playing surface and Chris Simpson, Barnoldswick’s new signing from Silsden, was given his debut in midfield.

Neil Chapman shot over the bar while Shaun Airey then Aarron Hollindrake went close in the opening stages.

Chadderton had chances too but couldn’t beat Alex Woodcock in the Town goal.

After a quiet start, Simpson became more influential and his first strike at goal had the goalkeeper scrambling as it just looped over the bar.

The last opportunity of the half fell to the home side when a superb glancing header from a free kick grazed the post.

Airey was booked early in the second half and was soon replaced by Connor Smith.

The substitute had an immediate impact. His pass created space for Chapman whose pin point cross fell nicely for Stewart Airdrie to tap in.

Chadderton then had their best chance of the game. A long clearance created indecision in defence but the centre forward could only smash the ball into the on rushing Woodcock’s face, Town looked to have made the game safe when a superb run and cross from Spencer Jordan ended with Hollindrake having the simplest of finishes to put the visitors two up.

This should have left Town to coast home but a lack of concentration and a great strike enabled Tom Hughes to score.

In the second minute of injury time a deep cross found the Chadderton sub Chris Pauley who tapped in at the far post.
