Dram Community 0 Steeton 1

STEETON left it late before grabbing a winner they thoroughly deserved and it came from an unlikely source.

Elliot Scott, making his first start of the season, curled a rare right-footed effort past the home keeper in the 80th minute to thwart the efforts of a resolute Dram side that belied their position as the league’s basement side.

With a couple of players missing, on Scott started at left back and Alex Yates came into the side.

The only surprises were on the bench where late cry offs meant manager Roy Mason and his assistant Adam Smith were both named among the substitutes.

Steeton had a great early chance with Sam Rooke heading over from a corner. Lee Reilly then did well to turn in the box and his fierce drive had to be turned away for a corner.

The Chevrons were piling on the pressure and Andy Briggs cut in from the left-hand side and crashed a shot against the bar which rebounded to safety.

Steeton were always the more dangerous side with Tom Sowerbutts and Andy Holden always looking to get on the ball.

Rooke and Alistair Morgan were dominating in defence with the former not losing a header in the first period.

On the only occasion Wayne Mahomet was called into action he comfortably dealt with everything that the home side could throw at him.

The second half saw much of the same with Steeton going close again. Skipper Tim Hird was driving his side forward and a smart piece of play between Reilly and Sowerbutts led to a Yates’ snap shot which went just wide.

Reilly suffered a tight hamstring and he was replaced by Steve Pearson in a move that saw Scott pushed forward.

It looked as if a goal wasn’t going to come for Steeton and Holden again did well to wriggle free in the box and his effort went too high as another chance went begging.

Joe Mason should have capitalised on confusion in the home box but fired the loose ball over the bar when he should have really hit the target.

Mason then looked to have broken the deadlock when he met Scott’s cross on the left only for the keeper to produce and outstanding save.

With time running out it was Scott who found space in the box and kept his cool to ensure that the points were Steeton’s.

This week they face a tough trip to second-placed Lower Hopton and with four points separating the top four, the club are looking for a few supporters to make the trip to Mirfield.
