Silsden ace Dougie Lampkin defied the pain of a badly gashed toe on his left foot as he rode to victory in Satur- day’s Scott Trial at Marske.

It was the former world champion’s fourth win in the event which matches the number of triumphs his father Martin achieved in the gruelling event.

The 37-year-old sustained his injury two thirds of the way into the 80-mile moorland course.

But Lampkin maintained his concentration and made sure he made up for the disappointment of last year when he was pipped to the Alfred Scott Trophy by Scarborough’s Michael Brown.

Lampkin collected 55 penalties and finished 34 ahead of runner up Ross Danby.

Jonathan Richardson, who clocked the fastest time of 5hrs 18min 4sec, was third.

The competitors had to contend with a mixed bag of weather including thick fog, torrential rain, and then some sunshine.

The stream levels were high in places and the moors in general were heavy and that slowed progress and meant more fuel was burnt by the engine to keep a fast pace.

Every Scott Trial carries hard luck stories and former winner James Dabill capped them all by crashing into a stone wall on the approach to the first petrol halt just 13 sections from the start. Dabill sustained a wrist injury and his Beta UK machine was wrecked.

JST Gas Gas won the manufacters’ and Richmond the club team prize.
