IT was standing room only at the John Charles Centre for Sport last weekend as the Skipton Swimmers made an impressive start to the Yorkshire Championship winter competition.

Over the two days, 17 competitors aged between nine and 12 competed in a total of 74 races and between them clocked up 21 top-ten places including five top-three finishes.

The most memorable performance of the weekend were from 11-year-old Jack Jenkinson who claimed the gold medal and a new club record in the 100m freestyle with a time of 1min 05.14 seconds. He reached the finals of all nine of his events.

He also picked up a bronze medal in the boys 200 individual medley with a time of 2.47.64.

Will Oliver, also aged 11, won silver in the 50m breaststroke event with a time of 40.00 and bronze in the 100m breaststroke in 1.27.64 seconds. He also reached three more finals,

Finally, Rowan Box won a bronze medal in the boys nine-year-old 50m breaststroke with a time of 48.77 and qualified for one further final.

Jack Jenkinson reached the finals in all nine of his events while Kaye Fenton secured four top-ten finishes.

Both Lily Mae Pratt and Katie Simpson qualified for two finals.

Several of the younger Skipton swimmers made their debut at a Yorkshire Championships.

Harry Cockburn, Max Shilito, Harry Forest, Sam Smith, Harry Kaminski and James West all enjoyed the weekend and gained valuable.

Other swimmers who competed and picked up personal best times were Fennella Turner, Phoebe Roe, Hebe Picking and Harvey Pennington.
