Settle bowler David Leeming continued his fine form by winning the Whitakers Chocolates Skipton League Handicap competition.

The final eight players took their place at Cononley last Friday, with the green in good condition.

League president Warren Burnett had a tough draw against Keighley’s David Jacques and went down 21-6, while Steve Longley beat his Gargrave colleague Paul Drinkall 21-15 with five points in the last three ends.

Leeming was the scratch player in the bottom half of the draw, and he found himself 14-7 down after 17 ends against Broughton Road’s Arnie Ripley.

Ripley also led 19-15 before Leeming came back strong to take the last four ends, to win 21-19.

Just like his father, Warren Burnett jnr found the going tough as he lost 21-11 to Mick Duke of Settle.

Duke’s win clinched a semi-final against his Settle colleague Leeming.

Duke nudged ahead 6-4 after a cagey start before Leeming raced away to win 21-9.

Steve Longley, playing off a handicap of five, took an early 6-2 lead before Jacques hit back to win their semi-final 21-6.

Jacques was looking untouchable but Leeming was up for the challenge.

Leeming got the better start and led 9-8. He stretched that advantage to 14-8 with three good ends.

Jacques continued to battle hard but couldn’t prevent Leeming from securing a 21-16 win.

This was Leeming’s first individual title since he won the Spring Floodlight in 1999.
